N6 - Athlone bypass: no lights

Is the Athlone bypass the only one now without lights?
I'm surprised (& disappointed) that lights weren't installed as part of the recent rebuild. Driving at night along it can be difficult due to all the bright lights from the town ruining your night vision.

I don't think the Arklow bypass has lights except at the junctions.

Majority of DC bypasses are not mainline lit. Cork (N25)/Dublin (M50) are but that's mostly it.

And the light reflected from your non-red front headlights does nothing to your visual purple?

As other posters mentioned, almost all bypasses have no lighting.

Junctions and approaches to J8 and J13 are already lit. Remember, the Athlone BP is only 6km and has 6 junctions - if you put lights on the junctions and approaches it will actually cover most of the bypass; there will be very little left to do in between.

Just by looking at Google Maps, I reckon the existing J8 and J13 lighting covers close to 1.8km of the bypass. There's not much left to do - it won't break the bank.

There is probably close to 2.5km lighting in total if you also include the lighting which is on the M6 at both ends. I only looked at lighting on the N6 bit.
As other posters mentioned, almost all bypasses have no lighting.

Do most bypasses run directly through an urban area though? Or are they bypassing a bit away from the urban area?

The areas North and South of the Athlone BP are built up - right up on top of the bypass in places.

In contrast the M18 Ennis Bypass is a bit to the East of the town so it isn't running through an urban area. The Ennis BP doesn't suffer from the problem mentioned by dolanbaker.

M50, N25 and N4 (Lucan) are urban bypasses and have lights.

There is a bit of a "light well" effect between junctions, which makes it appear darker than it is. Try standing beside a car with headlights on and looking at something in the other direction, it does make it harder for the eyes to compensate for the changing light levels.

Throw in the fact that pedestrians are still allowed walk along the DC, it can be disconcertingly hard in places to see if that shape a couple of hundred yards away is a person or not.
