    Hi all,

Just a little help for a total beginner if you guys dont mind.

Im looking to record an opening bit of music for my band, just an atmospheric piece, nothing too complicated, with a sound similar to the sound that begins at 4:16 in the video below or something you would hear sigur ros do.

I'm on ubuntu 10.4 so im a bit lost as to what I can do to accomplish this. I have reaper set up but im not much use with it. Also have guitars and a PodXTL but no keys.

Is there any program that I can download and use to make a little piece like this??

    Thanks.

You could start with the "Bristol" synth emulator Here
it has emulations of Moog, Prophet-5, Juno-6, Hammond, Vox DX-7 etc. excellent piece of kit.

Theres also a couple of music and media specific distros you could try. I'm playing with Ubuntu Studio and APODIO. Ubuntu studio is a little less techie.

Amsynth is a good, simple and easy to use synth. If you want something with ridiculous amounts of settings, you can try ZynAddSubFX. Both are available from the Ubuntu repositories. Any time I want an atmospheric effect i use Amsynth. You can get it to randomize the parameters and you can get some interesting sounds that way and then tweak to your liking.

Load Reaktor as a VST plugin inside Reaper and that should do the trick.
