Just wondering does anyone besides Sinn Fein supporters wear easter lilys? I think its unfair that sinn fein ought to be the only political party to benefit from the sale of easter lilys, plus the paper ones they sell look pure manky. I would be in favour of a simple plastic one.

    as opposed to this

The Easter Lily is not 'owned' by any one party or group. The wearing of the lily does not signify any political allegiance, it merely demonstrates that you have respect for those who fought and died for freedom. You can buy the traditional paper ones, or there are little metal badge ones, I haven't seen plastic ones mind you.

It does seem to have been hijacked by Sinn Fein, or at least in my opinion it has.

It would be nice to see an effort to claim it back and have it as a non-party associated symbol. I'd happily wear one then.

A better idea would be for sinn fein to adapt the poppy as a remberance symbol to dead republican volunteers. The monies raised could be given to the vigtims of british violence and their families. This would eliminate the sectarianism associated with it presently

    This wouldn't make sense though.

What is the significance of the poppy to the republican movement?

It was chosen as a symbol of remembrance by the commonwealth nations following the Great War because the poppy was the first flower which in the fields where thousands upon thousands of commonwealth troops were killed.

Besides, it is hardly imaginative to take a symbol with no meaning to you, used by the factions you oppose, and trying to give it a meaning for your people is there?

The Worker's Party used to sell them (and possibly still do?) and I'd imagine most of the small Republican splinter groups do too.

Sinn Féin don't make money from the lillies, the proceeds from them go to the National Graves Association.

Also, other parties are free to use different ones but don't, ask them why not.

The cash goes to the NGA, a worthy cause.

They were introduced by Cumann na mBan in 1926 as a way of raising funds for political prisoners. I don't see how people can claim they have been hijacked by any one group. Its not a free state emblem!

The only people who wear them are the Republicans. Who are by definition a different 'kind' of person.

I don't see why anyone would want to commemmorate a militaristic failure based on a psychotic doctrine of blood sacrifice - a form of cultism which intended to 'shame' a nation into violent conflict as a reaction to what was in effect a mass suicide... So yeah, in short, I probably won't be wearing one this easter.
