Hi folks. My wife was given her mothers engagement ring a few years ago. Her mother has suggested we sell it and use the money as needed! Anyway it was bought about 45YRS ago in England for around 500 sterling in an antique West End jewellers shop in London. I'm looking for info on somewhere to get an up to date valuation on it as it does not have any previous paperwork with it. Also would like to know where we could sell or auction it if the wife decides to do this (It is hers after all). Any info would be great. Thanks in advance.
Ps. Would like to keep valuation costs to min. If i had the money we wouldn't be selling it. It would prob be handed down to our daughter. Thanks again.

Weirs of Grafton Street, Dublin, might be a good first port of call http://www.weirandsons.ie/ to give you an idea of its value and Weldons of Temple Bar, Dublin.2. might be a good place to sell your ring http://www.jwa.ie :)

The auction house will probably do a free verbal valuation for you- not much point in paying for a written one if you're going to sell it!

Just had another look at the ring. It is stamped saphena and is i think 18 carat gold. It has other jewellers stamping and has a three digit i presume catalogue/reference number. it is single diamond i presume about 3-4mm diameter. Any ideas or info on saphena rings?

You could also try O'Reillys auctioneers in the City Centre (Dublin) .

Presume it is a round cut? If the stone is 3-4mm, it is probably just under a quarter carat in size - and, depending on colour/clarity, will be worth around the €500 mark - which may then not be worth it when auction fees etc are taken into consideration. Do bring it into O'Reilly's, they will give you an honest opinion. If you know any more details, or even have an accurate measurement, do elaborate here and I could help a bit more.

There are a couple of places in the Powerscourt Centre specialising in antique jewellery so they may have a look at it for you.
