you would be well within your rights to shoot that dog and send the bill for the bullet to the owners not to mention replacing your hens.

i don't really care what you think fodda or anyone else for that matter when i have a stinking great feral buckcat killing my daughters pet bantams in the middle of the night i take appropriate action .i don't think the great non shooting fraternity is going to be worried about feral animals that are doing damage being controlled humanely
i know you live in an ideal situation where every animal you own is tucked up behind steel wire and concrete where nothing can get at them i envy you i really do especially when im trudging round lambing ewes and free range fowl
now change the record cos i for one am sick and tired of it

Call the gardai, by law they have to take the dog and it has to be put to sleep under the dogs worrying livestock act, if they say there is nothing they can do quote the act.

You haven't a hope of getting your money back, for that to happen the dog would have to have an owner that would claim it which I'm sure they won't or they will have to be tied to the owner is done way I.e. microchip, license, again, highly doubtful.

As far as I am aware you are also well within your rights to shoot the dog, it must however be in dire straits I.e. starving in order to be taking hens like that, you say she was either in pup or just after, well if she is just after and you shoot her, it's most likely that those pups will die a slow and painful death. That's why I would suggest you go with the law.

Only job. Cures hassle that you neither ask for or want. Not your job to worry about other peoples laziness, ignorance or blatant disregard for your property.(or their own for that matter leaving it loose) I'd be alerting your eldery neighbors that a shot might be fired in the next few nights.
Pure nonscience talking to the OWNERS or the Guards. Local farmer had sheep killed last week by dogs. Call the guards. What did do? SFA!!

Actually lads just after noticing, he said hes neighbours next door. Must be living in a built up area. Guess the dog gets to keep his brains after all. Just call the guards and then set up a few a snares for the following night. Its reckless discharge if you let a round off.

If the crowd that own it are as clannish as you say just shoot it and do away with it.
If you go the other route ie the Gardai then your clannish friends will know what your at and you don't need the hassle I presume.

I've had to shoot dogs in similiar circumstances for the father in-law and neighbours. Most of these strays are in bad shape so I reckon I am doing them a favour - otherwise they would probably die of starvation or be killed on the road etc.

PS: Fodda, AFAIK feral cats have the same status as mink so a landowner is intitled to shoot or trap them.

+1 - next time bring the shotgun. Pellets first shot, bb's second, and a slug the third.

Ifonly slugs were a little easier to get.

That comment does not represent the hunting community in good way at all. Its a public forum after all which some lads seem to forget.

He has to do something. Would you rather he took his trusty machete out and cut the dog up into bits and peices.

Shotgun blast to the head is the quickest and most humane way. But if hes in a built up area then snares would be the way to go.

EDIT: Besides the law is on his side in this case.

Cats have no protection at all on this country pets or feral, they are same as foxes and rabbits

    I dunno Kildare17hmr.

Im not going to push the point because Im not 100% sure but I do seem to remember hearing one time that since a cat isnt like a dog in the sense that you can control him and not let him onto other peoples property that the collar law is there.

Like just say you live in the country and theres farmland touching yours, you might aswell be talking to the wall as telling the cat "dont go in that field" and lets face it, it would be an awful waste of time and money to try and fence off your garden like you could with a dog.

ANyway I'll leave it at that because Im not 100% sure on the issue. But I do know if it was me, unless he was being a right pain in the ass, I wouldnt shoot a cat if he had a collar on. And I know a few other lads who feel the same.

we are not talking about a neighbours dog crapping on you lawn

he is asking a question on pest control with a firearm,

if it was a fox he'd already be dead..
Farmers are legally entitled to shoot dog that are threatening their stock, with a collar or other wise( this is my opinion) one of the farmers that sign my permission told me a few years ago they shot two dogs worrying his sheep, both had collars and both belong to neighbours
he didnt shoot the dog out of consideration for his neighbours....

next time op just shoot the dog and say nothing

have had hens attacked by dogs a few times now and the first dog got away because i didnt bring the gun when going to investagate
if i see a dog near a hen now i dont ask questions just shoot it
when the dog is dead it cant come back

dont tell anybody as this can cause hastle
    why did you shoot it
where is the hen he killed
even if you have the hen prove my dog killed it

shoot the dog no second chance
if you let him get away he or she will kill again maybe not your stock but someone will lose stock because you let him go
