hey guys ive a question, a while back i took the big ring of my mtb triple, so now ive a double up front and a 9 speed at the back, i have not tried to put any sort of chain device on it and i wont be for a while as funds are tight :o

my question is can i remove a few links from the chain to tighten it up a bit? is there a formula for how many links should be in your chain? im asking because the chain has come off on some of the particularly ruff stuff after doing this

    thanks in advance

You could route the chain over the largest front chainring and the smallest rear cog. If the jockey wheels align vertically it should be the right chain length.

Surely that was one of the 1st things you would learn in a bicycle mechanics course Sean?:o

Did you adjust the front derailleur limit to allow for the lack of big ring?

It's all covered in this article by Sheldon Brown!

yeah ive the limit screw the whole way in so the front mech is set up grand, tbh i think my setup is a little strange for a mtb as normally someone would just throw a chain device on to stop it from coming off, but im being awkward :D might just take a few links out and see what happens

As for the 4 week course i did, well it was 4 weeks there is a metric ton of ****e i still dont know but hey im willing to learn :p

thanks for that guide as well, tis handy to have that stuff lying around

Quite a few of the guys I race with take the big ring off and run 2x9 without a chain device and it seems to work fine so it should be do-able!
