I know it is 1.5 but hardly any difference between it and 1.4.

Toyota Corolla but you will pay big money for a 02 hatch in 5 door. I never see any young ones driving the older model in the 5 door hatch. They are horrible yokes.

As above, plenty of almeras around so you could take your pick, although it might not tick the box in relation to looks. Just make sure there is no timing chain issues, as depending on year and mileage it could be due a change.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

The almera is out due to it being a 1.5. I know there is very little in the differance between a 1.4 and 1.5 but then the car is not for me!! Max is a 1.4

civic is the only answer if it has to be 1.4

they have a bad rep for head gaskets which mine has had repaired with MLS gasket and hasn't given any trouble since. this car also has a new heater resistor, sunfoor glass and rubber, a new (second hand, no damage) bootlid wiring loom fitted and has no rust at all. all the common fault areas are covered on this car.

granted "its a rover" but by no means a bad car.

I know the OP said he was willing to go up to a 1.4, but that car has 105hp and won't be that cheap to insure, especially with the boy racer reputation that it has. Also, I would have reservations about letting a young girl/woman drive this as a first car as she might not be too dilligent about maintaining and servicing the thing. Anyway, if the OP is going to consider this car, they might as well consider most 1.6 litre engined cars, as they'll have about the same power as the ZR.

My thoughts, would you consider a Hyundai Accent 1.3? A bit cheap looking, but you get a newer car for your money and reasonable reliability, certainly more so than a ZR. Cheaper to tax and insure than the ZR too - http://cars.donedeal.co.uk/for-sale/cars/2698258

a claimed 105bhp, at a massive 5 or 6k rpm. these cars are not fast, i actually found it a bit sluggish and im certain my 90bhp 170k focus would leave it sitting (so to speak), the restricted 1.4 K only made 85bhp... fast they aren't.

i can appreciate why insurance has the potential to be expensive, i insured one as a 19 year old male with 2 years no claims for 900 which is competitive.

hyundai accent, dont slip into a boredom induced coma please for a car with very similar running costs and reliability ratings.

the accent and ZR are actually in the same tax bracket too.

your linked accent is 03, my ZR is a 03 and cheaper than the accent, and the one RJ linked is an 04 and surely could be bought for the same price as the accent. both rovers have lower mileages too ;)

yes im a rover fanboi, but still.

Cheers guys. Just to make it clear its not a first time car. This girl passed her driving test before she insured her first car and is driving almost a year now. She just wants something a bit bigger than her 206.

On the rover, i just dont think it would suit her. She wouldnt be the type to be checking coolant levels every few days or even notice the temp gauge going into the red.

I think a focus would suit her as it would be the most reliable, not having the engine issues the vw 1.4 has. Also she would rather a hatchback than a sallon and something she could drive straight away (test at least)

She is looking for something with alloys etc for a sporty look but she knows she cant be over picky with her budget.

Edit: she is set to a max of 1.4. It has nothing to do with power etc and more to do with tax i would say.

Annual tax isn't far too expensive between 1.4 and 1.5 (€358 and €384 respectively) as such. It does get comparatively steeper beyond 1.5 though..

Is waiting a year and increasing her budget not an option? If she's had trouble-free motoring from her 206, then I would have reservations about trading it in for a 10 year old Focus. Performance is crap and it's quite thirsty, also, with age you have to consider lots of little niggles and the onset of rusting.

I know that but she says 1.4 is the max

The 206 is sold. She just wants a change
