Been enjoying this for the last couple of nights, pretty standard list no big suprises.Wanted a bit of a debate :).The only thing is My Bloody Valentine haven't had a song featured in the list which I feel is a disgrace considering they're the greatest thing Irish music has produced. And Reptilia was only 497#,truly shocking stuff.

Tis a weird list alright; lots of songs I've never heard of from bands I know well...

Really? It seems pretty standard to me. Some omissions so far that are surprising and a couple of inclusions but most of the songs are the ones you'd expect to hear. Which ones have you never heard of?

I haven't heard any of the recent Irish ones.

How was this list drawn up? Public or internal vote?

I don't feel like combing through the list to pick up examples; but what I mean is that B-Sides are being put higher on the list that the much more popular and well known songs.

I know the list is subjective, but I would consider the Greatest Songs of All Time to be the most influential, well known songs.

EDIT: I agree will pretty much everything in the top 50, after updating it.

LCD Soundsystem at number 2, good band but WTF? Did the LCD Soundsystem fans sabatagoe the vote or what? We'll probably have The Libertines at No 1.

Joy Division No. 1, great song but it wouldn't have made my top ten.
No Beatles in the top 20, no U2 in the top 50 & REM & Primal Scream didn't even make it in to the top 100.

A good list of songs in general. A ridiculous number of Arctic Monkeys songs though. Surprised "She's Lost Control" by Joy Div didn't make it. No Editors, even though they play them quite a bit of Phantom. Just one White Stripes but the biggest outrage of all is No. 142! Why oh why?

I don't feel like combing through the list to pick up examples; but what I mean is that B-Sides are being put higher on the list that the much more popular and well known songs.

Don't see many b-sides on there at all. Maybe you should just get to know the back catalogues of bands that you "know well" because I don't see very many obscure tracks in there at all.

The Jam, James Brown and Roxy Music are notable omissions for me. Pretty happy with the number 1 though.

I think the point was to fill a few days with listeners choices, not to make a definitive list.

It's clearly a shockingly bad list if you look at it from point of view of top 500 songs of all time. Gold list of listenable radio though, enjoyed the few days of good songs.

Metallica - Enter Sandman is listed twice at 64 and 61.

Oh and All my friends is a worthy choice imo.

Someone Great by LCD Soundsystem is a far better song than either of the two that made it into the top 500.

There's Phantom's playlist sorted for 2012 then. Grand...

Had a search there and don't see any, but did nothing from The Streets make it in? That's a bit of a shocker imo.

What, The Jam didn't make it, now that's just wrong.
Big shocks for me, no God Save The Queen, Buzzcocks Ever Fallen In Love only at 500, no Dylan in the top 100 & no Clash in the top 50.

Adele looks slightly out of place in that list.

    Orange pilled.

I love how this thread has turned out!

Touché. Think there's a distinct possibility that I may have no frame of reference.

List is kinda dull but worthy, though ... for an edgy, independent station, it's a pretty standard, corporatised Mojo/Q/Classic Rock type list. Or maybe old age has just sent me all:

Enjoyable few days of listening. Obviously I don't agree with the order but that's not the point.

One notable omission would have to be 'Hard To Explain'.

Anyone pleasently suprised what was included? Glad Wilco got in with something from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (even though in 495th!) though it wasn't the song I voted for from them.

Was suprised the only weezer song was My Name is Jonas even though its an underrated song.

Wouldn't have thought Debaser would be the top Pixies song either.

Just realised that myself, how odd that 'Buddy Holly' or 'Sweater Song' didn't get a mention. Well, considering the amount of Blur tunes that did feature I'm quite surprised that 'Beetlebum' didn't get a look-in.

How was this list drawn up? Public or internal vote?

Apparently, the list was all based on listener's votes- it seems to have caused enough of a controversy though!

Regardless of what songs and bands are on the list or what order they came, it was great to hear some classics played on Phantom for a change instead of the usual, 'whats cool right now, I know lets play Lana Del Ray again for the 100th time today', playlists.

Like a few others, I enjoyed the few days listening.

Sorta pathetic the way phantom has become U2 obsessed since McGuinness took ownership of the station. Expected, but still pathetic.

You know, I could give out about some entries, but it would be an utterly futile endeavour. Like Empire's frequent (and laughable) 'best films of all time' polls, public votes are always to be taken with a pinch of salt.

    HOWEVER.

All My Friends is not, on any level I can understand, the second greatest song of all time. It's a good, perhap even great tune. But not the second greatest of all time.

    Did any one vote?
    These where my 5
I Wanna Be Adored-The Stone Roses,
New York City Cops - The Strokes,
Time For Heroes - The Libertines,
She's Lost Control - Joy Division,
Friday I'm In Love - The Cure.
Don't think any of them are my favourite songs of all time, but they where the songs I thought had a chance of getting into the chart.

I think the main gripe that people have here is that it's such a recent song. Scanning through the list itself, I'm hard pushed to find many songs that were released in the last ten years, let alone the last five. When it comes to compiling a list like this and proffering suggestions, people usually tend to venture a little further back in time and select songs that have had a little longer to seep into the public consciousness as they're that songs that have withstood the test of longevity and have attained the status of 'classic'.

Ten, fifteen years down the line, I'd say LCD Soundsystem will be considered one of 'the bands' of our current generation and the song's placing won't seem so incongruous.

'I Wanna...' was there in the 400's methinks. I'm also surprised at the lack of 'Friday I'm In Love' considering the amount of Cure tunes that did make the cut.

Just noticed enter sandman by metallica is there twice. Typo compiling the list?

I straight up copied the list over from Phantom's Facebook. Must be their mistake.

Cool, so it's phantoms top 499 songs till they get the finger out and fix it! :)

The later one in the list is Nothing Else Matters...if I remember rightly.
