Dublin Bus - New Year's Eve Diversions

The new year's eve diversions were just uploaded tonight on dublinbus.ie.

    http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/News-Centre/Travel-News/New-Years-Eve-Diversions/

A few things had struck me while reading them. New Year's Eve is on a Saturday this year. Dublin Bus had made a mistake in regards to the Xpresso routes. They had said that MOST were running on Saturday even though they only run on Monday to Fridays. Even though the 8 route to Dalkey is not displayed there, even though that does not run on weekends either.

I think some of the staff at DB may have been drinking too much mulled wine over the course of this Christmas and somehow they must thought later on, that they don't run on weekends at all.:D

There is no 67a any more. It is only a 67 from Merrion Square to Maynooth.

Nowhere on the page does it say Xpresso route are running. Only those routes affected display the diversion details. I'm guessing the list is based on a template of routes, it could possibly have a standard "not affected" on the routes not running/not affected to standardise the message.

I think you're being a bit unfair to be suggesting the page says "most" Xpresso routes are operating, it doesn't. It says they're either operating as normal (which is no service at weekends) or "no service".

Basically, if your bus route runs on Saturday you can find details here if it's affected.

    Actually it does, several times:
    27x Operating as normal.
    32x Operating as normal.
    33x Operating as normal.
    51x Operating as normal.
    66x Operating as normal.

You're probably right that it's based on a template and people should know that the 27x doesn't operate on Saturdays so when they say "operating as normal" they mean "not operating, as normal" but it's not really good enough, it's yet another vague announcement from DB.

    I loved these two:
747 FROM 14.00hrs. Will operate up and down the North and South Quays.

What on earth does that mean? Where is it serving / not serving? Bear in mind that this bus will be predominantly used by tourists. Will it stop at their hotel? Who knows - it certainly looks like DB don't.
15 Southbound: FROM 17:00hrs, from D'Olier St/Hawkins St, left to Townsend St

Which is it - D'Olier St or Hawkins St? Which one should passengers wait for their bus at?

Which means it's not operating. There is no Saturday service on the 27X.

You know that. I know that. Why don't Dublin Bus say that? Or just leave it off the list completely? Can you honestly justify it being there and phrased that way?

It is displaying the following routes here.

    Route 1 No Service
    Route 46E No Service

    But then it says here

    Route 116 Operating as Normal
    Route 118 Operating as Normal

These routes should have 'No Service' written beside them if these buses do not run on a Saturday, end of story.

That is misleading information right there in black & white. The staff at DB should have checked the template before uploading it on their website.

I've emailed them all the inconsistencies so we'll see if they fix it.

I've already said it should have a standard "route not affected" message.

I genuinely don't think Dublin Bus set out to confuse passengers to suggest "most Xpresso" services would be running on Saturday as the OP says they do. The simply said Xpresso routes will be operating normally, which means Monday to Friday.

Of course it would be better written differently, hopefully they will amend the routes you point out in your email.

You are correct. However, there others are right - only relevant information should be provided and surplus information should be culled.

During the snow last year, there was a comment like "Route 3: Only running to Pearse Street" - but it didn't say in which direction! I raised this on their Facebook page and it was acknowledged, but not acted upon.

When Obama was visiting, Dame Street (east of South Great Georges Street, both directions) and College Green (east / northbound) were closed. I overheard a route 83 driver, on the northbound leg, being told by the base controller to go from South Great Georges Street, to cross O'Connell Bridge (not on the route), but was **not** to use Christchurch.

This is the simplest route I can work out: http://maps.google.ie/maps?saddr=South+Great+Georges+Street,+Dublin&daddr=53.34225,-6.2625+to:53.33804,-6.26461+to:O%27Connell+Street+Lower%2FN1&hl=en&sll=53.342763,-6.25886&sspn=0.025007,0.077162&geocode=FeHxLQMdYmmg_ylJR7cHnQ5nSDEiBjlBroRvHg%3BFSrwLQMdHHGg_ylFvoZgnA5nSDGxWs37pscAEw%3BFbjfLQMd3mig_ymb4ztBng5nSDER-er8pscAEw%3BFWAGLgMda3yg_w&vpsrc=0&mra=dvme&mrsp=1&sz=14&via=1,2&t=m&z=14

One can imagine a double decker not negotiating this: http://maps.google.ie/maps?saddr=South+Great+Georges+Street,+Dublin&daddr=53.34225,-6.2625+to:53.33804,-6.26461+to:O%27Connell+Street+Lower%2FN1&hl=en&ll=53.343045,-6.262454&spn=0.003151,0.009645&sll=53.342763,-6.25886&sspn=0.025007,0.077162&geocode=FeHxLQMdYmmg_ylJR7cHnQ5nSDEiBjlBroRvHg%3BFSrwLQMdHHGg_ylFvoZgnA5nSDGxWs37pscAEw%3BFbjfLQMd3mig_ymb4ztBng5nSDER-er8pscAEw%3BFWAGLgMda3yg_w&vpsrc=6&mra=dvme&mrsp=1&sz=14&via=1,2&t=m&z=17&layer=c&cbll=53.343042,-6.262321&panoid=VTpBNgUav36AVNH8lqPx6g&cbp=12,92.32,,0,6.81

To be fair, the Obama and Queen diversions were on a different level. The Gardai were closing roads without any notice, even the official traffic plans were disrupted for periods of time. I guess controllers can be forced to divert buses away from areas for various reasons which might not be apparent to drivers or passengers at the time.

I would agree, but when this was the case in the past, there was always a flood of questions such as "what about the 40?", "what about the 15?" etc. With many of the routes in the city having changed in the last few months it was probably decided to list each route individually for clarity.

There is no excuse for examples such as yours where the direction of a cross city route diversion is not detailed.

    funny, the
33x isn't running all week, so mrs carawaystick is driving to the station, paying eur3 to park and eight euros odd for the train instead of a eur3.80 return bus fare.....

what's normal operation for an expresso on New Year's Eve so?

If any of the drivers can pass this up the line today - the earlier the better. The yellow bit need the greatest clarity and where I have included text it is a series of estimated guesses, not gospel.

The PDF is derived from the Excel file.
