Family car for +/- 10k

Currently have a citroen berlingo van and a Mx5, need to sell both to get a car as we've a chizzler on the way...

Been looking around and I'm leaning towards an decent sized estate car. I occasionally need a decent bit of space to carry goods. Considering Citroen C5, Peugeot 407, VW Passat, C4 Grand Picasso.. At the top end pushing towards a 520d (If i save all my pennies!)

Is there any of these that would be better than the others or anything else I should consider? Has to be a diesel, ideally with air con and cruise control (I do a fair bit of motorway miles), ideally 2008 onwards for cheaper road tax...

Never considered an accord estate... Ticks all the boxes, nice spec.. Defo worth consideration

For me the Saab is a bit pricey for what u get... Would prefer the Honda over it..

Massive car in terms of size with heavy depreciation. That could well be to your advantage. Mondeo could be more reliable than some of the others suggested and less costly to fix if anything did go amiss.

The depreciation seems to be in my favor.. There's a rake of them for sale in the UK at pretty decent prices. Could get a nicely specced 08 back with vrt paid for 10/11k. They seem to get pretty decent write ups and they've all the space I need...

Not wishing to rain on your parade but AFAIK the 2.0 Mondeo diesels are in the mid to high range on motor tax here - they were 447 pre-budget now 500+ AFAIK. If the tax is not an issue for you then they are a mighty machine for the money.

Tax is grand (although cheaper would be better), used to paying €6-800 for tax on our older cars...

The 2.0 TDCi in the new shape Mondeo is co-designed with Peugeot & Citroen. It is used in many other models out there is a fairly solid unit.

What sort of a box of tricks are these? I think they are a fantastic looking car?

Dont mean to hi-jack the thread but I was just wondering what estate could handle 3 child seats in the rear

That would be the new shape Citroen C5 estate. A great looking car is right. Would probably be ideal for the OP. Never been in one but have been in the old C5 and they are a lovely car, comfort wise. I'd imagine the new one is similar even on the standard suspension.

I'd guess something in the range of Saab 9-5, Volvo V70, etc. The important bit is how the rear seat bases are sculpted - if there are wide, deep cutaways in the bases, the middle seat might not sit too well on the middle bit and it might be hard to strap the middle belt into the buckle.

Good read there.. The mondeo takes 3 which is what I'm looking for, only the two outer seats have Isofix mountings tho
