    Hi there,

Is there any way of checking the history of a camera through a serial number or anything?

Just looking at buying a second hand camera and want to check its ok etc.. Lens and camera?

What things would you look for when buying something pricey?

    Cheers

No im afraid not, its not like a car where you can check its history through the license plate.

If your buying something pricey just make sure to check it throughly before buying.

If your buying online and can't do that, make sure the ad has some good pictures of the camera or the seller/website is reputable.

It's up on adverts, user only has one pic in a light box of it, says it is the actual camera. Will ave to go view as they are missing the hood. I didn't know if there was a way of checking or not so said I'd ask the question before I part with a sizable amount of money!

Ask about the number of shutter actuations (roughly how many photos were taken) and depending on the camera model the shutters/mirror box can from ~40K-150K actuations.
This is like asking the mileage on a car pretty much and it will give you a rough idea of use and when it may fail although some cameras can outlive the expected fail rate by 100K or fail at 8K so it really varies.

Ask about any previous faults if any/what needed to be repaired.

Has it been shot in heavy weather/extreme conditions etc... this will most likely get the seller talking about what use the camera got during it's life which would be handy to know also.
