Lads and lassies I will do up the final challenge status in a few days. Just giving you a warning to update by 11:59:59 Dec 31 as anything after this will not count! We had a few late entries last year and I had to be harsh.

Also, for the 2012 challenge I'm open to feedback on what you feel works well and what could be changed to improve it? It was great by the way to have RC and Oryx on it this year and will be interesting to see how many guys got chicked :)

Gotta say MCOS, think you got it spot on tbh. Very transparent and people had their chance to influence things. Well done dude.

I thought it was good this year and the updates are fun. No way I would have got my ass into gear to do that much running in December if it wasn't for the challenge. Good having RQ up ahead all year too. Kept me working. :) Thanks for all the hard work.

Over & out. Despite big increases on the bike and in the pool, I'm actually going backwards on this table in 2011 :).

Well done everyone, some great progress here!

I've donz what I canz and I can'tz do no more. :) Thanks Izoard for making me sign up to this in the first place. :)

Decided to finish my year with a rest day. Good oul battle Oryx, I was top lady last year(I think I was the only one that played) - something tells me you just nipped me this year. :)

Thanks for all your work MCOS, the 'league' makes it interesting.

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

Your still top lady, you did everyone by a long piece on the running. You'll wipe the floor with me next year. Tis fun having someone to battle with tho. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,208 ✭✭✭shotgunmcos

Last update myself. I was tempted to head out for a 16km or so run but it would have been junk miles and RC deserves to top the run section, well done ma'am ;)

So folks, everyone happy the way it is to go again for 2012? I'll post the final table in this thread and maybe when you see the end league panned out you may have questions or suggestions.

If only i got that 94000mtr swim set i had scheduled for this morning i could have nabbed 1st place from MCOS:) Happy with my first year in tri, well done to everyone.

Final Table below. Well done to everyone. All regular posters achieved one target at least. mdlb joined late so maybe will hit some green marks this year. Oryx is top Lady this year pipping RC at the post, well done! The numbers are all generally higher than last year. More gold run marks, 4 people hitting 3 gold etc...

Thank you for participating and best of luck for your goals for 2012 smile.gif

Quick question before I set up the 2012 thread. Robinph has set up a google docs spreadsheet for the 1,000 mile thread table. It seems to be much easier to input and manage data. How would everone feel about this challenge evolving as such? I will post some update table posts on the thread during the year but with just one link it could leave room for the banter.... So leave as is or move to one link, one table?

I update with my phone mostly so I don't know how that would work? Not a huge deal though. Thanks again for all the effort. :)

    Great stuff!

One vote here for the google docs spreadsheet.

You update the bbcode tables with your phone.

Google Docs can be updated via a phone, not quite as featured as the desktop browser version obviously, but for just making minor edits such as the updating of these kinds of stats it should be way easier.

It's also possible to export the table as a pdf, for example, so you could do that once a month or whenever to keep track of the progress.

Thanks. I had a look at the other challenge table link but no table visible on the page. Just an icon for a unviewable item.

Cheers for all the hard work throughout the year Shotgun. As for 2012, I'll go with the crowd. Not pushed either way.

However, your final table has a flaw. That is not El Directors final run total. Not going to change his final position, but will close the gap on me a little.

Actually scrap that, I've just realised it would change me from joint 7th to a stand alone 8th. Forget I said anything.

Great stuff shotgunmcos - thanks for putting in the work on this in 2012.

I hit gold on the running this year but was just as proud to get the green for the swimming. Total focus on Boston marathon for me now so barring injury I won't post in the 2012 table until late April.

Whatever table-type the majority go for is good with me.

Good luck to all in your goals for 2012!

    Great work MCOS.

Happy to go with the flow for 2012 table format.

Would be an interesting comparison in the table if people put in total hours training too. I'm probably only thinking this way because of Don Fink. But I would love to see how everyones distances correspond with the time they put in.

I used DF last year for the winter training. Its good to follow to get a base on but found the IM phase didn't suit me (April onwards) and I did my own thing, perhaps to my detriment.

Interesting idea, I thought of this last night too when I was setting up the new challenge in google. I thought about entereing an OW, Turbo, Treadmill column just as FYIs to see how people accumulate their mileage.

I could still put them in if there was enough interest?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

Off topic Shotgun but I have been perusing the Fink book over the xmas whilst gorging on mince pies and pudding and i was put off a little by the minimal base period training times. I know your base work was huge but do you feel it was beneficial on the big day. Would you have toned things down in base in retrospect. 6 hours a week starting off, only 2 swim sessions etc is a big come down from what I am used to doing.

I have the final reminder about the Connemarathon sign up in my inbox and this alone will push me way above those training times Fink suggests. Although I did an easy 7 miles on new years day and my legs are still shot, haven't ran in over a month before that so I am thinking Connemara is a bad idea anyways

Anyways is Finks plan a long 30 weeks and I am as well off taking it easy in base while I have the chance?

    * I may not even be doing an Ironman this year but my thinking is it may be no harm to see what the training is like and does it suit me for a decent crack at one next year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,208 ✭✭✭shotgunmcos

Hey CW, DF starts low and build teh volome over the 30 weeks. So you ma start at 6 hours and it may feel like you are doing nothing but it does pich at some point.

I did the competitive plan up to March. I started at 10 hours and everything felt great, easy and manageable up to xmas. I went on a run streak then on top of the plan and ended up in great shape for Conn. The problem there was I was too close to peaking too early and the subsequent block of heavy training left me too tired entering the IM phase. So if its Conn you are looking at then no harm. If Conn is a stepping stone to something else, then piling on additional volume for it will be counter productive. Its also too tough a Marathon to do as a 'training run' in spring IMO. I had a great day at Conn last year but it cost me in the long run with the DF workload beneath it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

Thanks for that I was leaning towards binning Conn and that is the final nail in the coffin. I would have to go on another 12 week training session leaving me with little time for swimming and in particular cycling which needs the most work

I was thinking that as well. No points for it though, the people who do loads of cycling will have me hammered. :(

Exactly, I'll throw in a few optional columns for OW swimming mileage, turbo vs road mileage, treadie vs road mileage. Basically to see just how much triathlon training is done indoors! Also, who loves their turbo most, who dips their toe in a cold lake first etc... :) Only the original SBR will count towards the challenge

Start cycling then:) you cannot skip it in a triathlon before the run.

Hitting the turbo tomorrow chief. Only because it's enforced though as I won't be able to swim or run.

15k of commuting on the bike today, see I DO cycle. :p

I love cycling it just takes so much time, my TV feels neglected if I leave it on a weekend morning for a long spin. :)
