twist shifters on roadbike

I've a 20 year old reynolds frame bike with downtube indexed shifters (7 speed)

The upgrade to STI shifters is costly.

Indexed Revoshifters are really cheap, and I think it might be an improvement on downtube shifters.

Can anyone recommend a revoshifter , do they fit nicely on a roadbike ?

Also where on the handlebars would be best ? I think probably on the part of the handlebar nearest the stem ?

I'd only want to change the shifter controlling the rear cogs.

I also have a modern optimised roadbike, but my Reynolds bike is just for taking out on winter spins, and commuting.

I have seen revoshifters on a road bike (el cheapo ebay-special bike) but I don't know how well it works. My experience of revo shifters is that they're awful although I've only ever used them on crappy mountain bikes and the like so maybe I've just been using crappy revo shifters.

One think you might want to be aware of is that standard flat bars are 25.4mm while standard drop bars are usually 26mm plus you have all those twists and turns to negotiate so it might be a right bitch trying to fit revo shifters although it's still probably doable.

Another option as Kumate mentioned is stem mounted shifters or alternatively you could use bar end shifters or butterfly shifters.
