I have a long haul flight at 7am in a few weeks from dublin airport, my bus arrives at the airport at 12am, should I get a hotel or just stay at the airport, is there anything open like a cafe, bar, etc?

There is some 24hr food/drinks but no bar land-side in Terminal 1. There is none in Terminal 2, everything there only opens for flights so 5-6am is about when stuff comes alive there and would close by about 11pm or so.

Personally, if either of the on-site hotels are cheap enough I'd go for them. Any of the other "airport" hotels are too far for the travel time to them/back from them to make any sense. You should be able to scavenge some sleep on the flight.

Some good advice in that thread on staying over night in the airport. There is some good deals in the Travel Lodge and Premier Inn both in Swords and are both round €40 and have a courtesy bus upto the airport for like €2! Runs every 15min :D

Airport campus hotels like the Raddisson and the Clarion are both €89

Really depends whether you would like to grab 5-6hours sleep in a warm bed or sit in a chair or sleep on the floor for the same time. Only thing is that the airport will leave all the lights on all night so it's very bright..

You could lurk around upstairs in T1 if you wanted. There is always a few up there waiting around. I think the macdonalds is open fairly late too. T2 is only a 2 minute walk down from t1 so you dont need to worry about that.

Are the travelling public allowed kip down in the airport or is it only permitted during strikes , bad weather , etc ?

Person with a lawful purpose are permitted to stay the night in the airport. So if your catching a flight early the next morning or if you arrive in late and the next bus is early the next morning etc..

Members of the Airport's Police Service carry out regular checks on members of public staying over night and will make a requirement of a person to produce travel documents or ID etc.. just to confirm their legit. This is done also in aid of crime prevention and to lower the risk of thefts to passengers staying the night ;)

I would seriously doubt the three course meal will be available at 1am (which is about the time you'll get in).

Would it be possible to get an earlier bus thus getting a full nights sleep.

Looks like you'll miss the shuttle service to the hotel. That'll probably cost you about another €20 for a taxi.
Our shuttle bus runs from 04.00 - 23:45 daily.
The last collection from Dublin Airport to the Metro Hotel is at 23:45.

Not if you tell the driver to go the back road (actually it wouldn't even be €20 the front way)

I still don't think there's any use in getting a distant/shuttled hotel when you'll need to be back in the airport for 5am or so to check in for the flight.

The at 1am the three course meal would consist of three cookies, kettle and a few tea bags that are normally left in the hotel room. :p

A bit late for the OP but i would've said kip in the airport. T2 is probably slightly better in that the heating is always on full blast so no chance of getting cold and there's no Security PA announcements to annoy you.

The airport cops are grand, they'll leave you alone once you've reason to be there. The Meeting Point coffee bar is open 24 hours or Maccers over in T1 is 24 hour too.
