Hey guys, my situation is that my father has recently become very weak and unwell. He needs a lot of day to day help in eating etc... My mother is looking after him and is considering applying for carers allowance. Both are receiving non contrib state pensions. If my mother is successful in claiming carers allowance, will it affect my fathers pension??? Thanks.

There must be a medical requirement for a person to need a carer, if your father's doctor is willing to fill out the appropriate section of the Carer's Allowance form then your mum should be entitled to the payment.

Here is the link to the Citizens Information website that explains the rules on half rate payments.

Thanks. Medical requirement shouldn't be an issue but do you know if it will affect his pension. Don't think it will but not sure.

Carer's Allowance is not taken into account when assessing means for the non-contributory pension. This means that neither of your parent's pensions should be affected if your mum is awarded half rate carers.
