I'm trying to figure out how to wire up some courtesy lights on my BMW. What I am looking at is installing lights behind the door handles, so when I unlock the car I want them to switch on and stay on for about 10 seconds. Then gradually switch off, not suddenly turn off.

Any idea's on how I might go about this?

I was thinking 2 things. 1- Locate the aftermarket alarm that's been previously installed by the previous owner and see if there's any 12v output specifically for courtesy lights.

    or

2- Install a Time Delay Relay. Have it wired up to the indicator bulb, so when it flashes when I unlock the car it should activate the relay switch.

Anybody done this kind of mod before?

Vehicle wiring products can provide the timing relay

The trigger is more difficult. If the dome light meets your needs as a trigger source your sailing.
