Used to use VHI annual as I had medical cover included. Pretty reasonable iirc.

Covered both on and off piste (check that if you plan to go off-piste, as a number of policies specifically excluded it)

Ventureguard could be worth a look. Know someone who used it once in France and they could not have been more helpful.

    no problems whatsoever

Surprised no one has mentioned multitrip.com

A few of the banks also do travel insurance. AIB's is meant to be very good.

Covered both on and off piste

VHI have a serious amount of conditions about what they cover off piste including

Must be with a guide, (Think it even goes into detail about their level of experience and local knowledge)

Must have full off piste gear (Shovel, Probe,Transceiver)

VHI dont even offer a definition of on piste and off in the N.America.

Mutli Trip is really good as is AIB/BOI travel insurance. Also if you are in France/Switzerland etc for an extra few Euro when buying your pass they offer incredible insurance cover for personal injury.

Sorry, they must have added the 'with a guide bit' recently. If you have a basic VHI overseas policy then you have the overseas health cover portion of that anyway. However, helicopters are expensive...I wonder would the ski patrol tell your insurers exactly where you were found?

The US skiing I understand why there is no definition of on/off piste; for many areas of US you can pretty much ski where you want, some of the pistes include tree skiing and ungroomed sections. There is a resort near me that doesn't groom, period. So the definition of 'piste' gets a bit blurry.

N.America define In bounds and out of bounds but VHI do not clarify if you are outside of the groomed area but in bounds if they cover you same for Europe on Itinerary runs and the Guide thing has been in the small print for at least 6b years.

Even for guys like me that have an off piste qualification VHI do not accept it unless you are a local knowledgeable guide

I went with insureandgo.ie for a trip, had to make a claim and found them good to deal with (ie they paid out). They're pretty reasonable as well, annual is about €35.

An EHIC is worth applying for - http://www.ehic.ie/

You may not even need to use your insurance unless you need to be lifted off the mountain/have to get home. But you DEFO need insurance too!

most resorts will give you rescue cover in any case.
prob costs around 15 quid for a week
gets you to a hospital / clinic
if you've got private health insurance sure the rest is covered anyways

Im covered with Aviva, €70 for the year with winter cover, including off piste.

One thing worth checking is how much their 'any one item' cover is if you're bringing skis/board. No point in having your skis/board stolen if they'll ony cover it up to €300, less your excess. Also applies to laptops etc. Could be worthwhile putting them on your house insurance.

Suppose most people have it mainly in case they cartwheel down a slope though.

All the insurance deals cover avalanche/piste closure and equipment. Do you have to get a seperate policy for recovery from the mountain. I.e if you have an accident and you need an ambulance, are you covered with the standard aib/vhi winter sports cover?

I have the EHIC and hospital cover with VHI that covers me up to €100,000 for emergency treatment when abroad.

But most don't cover your evacuation that is the expensive bit!

My brother had to use his insurance yesterday after breaking part of his leg here in Austria. Have to say start to finish it was seamless. We all a bit strung out along the piste and were ahead of him when he called on the radio/walkitalkies to say he had done damage. We called the emergency number and a Snowmobile came out to pick him up. Brought him to the ground from there to an ambulance to a local clinic. Accident was at about 10.30 by 1.30 he was back in our apartment fully diagnosed.

VHI were very good aganged to pay the doctor directly organised flight home, ambulance to airport in Austria and from Airport in Dublin. He will be home tonight and back into the Irish health system so id imagine things will slow down dramatically but he has to have a operation within 5 days.

    Hi Rew

Does your brother have both private health insurance and travel insurance with VHI?

    Cheers, BN

Sorry to hear that dude. Hope your brother makes a speedy recovery. I was in Czech Republic when one of the lads broke his leg. Always puts a bit of a black cloud over the week.

Just out of curiosity, what happened exactly?

Yeah and def makes it easier I think, previous horror story I posted earlier in this thread was a woman who had VHI Health and separate travel and it wasn't as straight forward for her, but I did get that story 2nd hand.

Just out of curiosity, what happened exactly?

Wasn't a major break (still serious dont get me wrong) so he was disappointed to miss the 2nd half of the week but didn't put a major dampner on the holiday.

He was a few hundred meters into a very long red pistes (no lifts for 10km or so) doing relatively low speed. He was getting the feel for things as it was only the 3rd run of the the day and he had changed his rental boots after the fist day or so. He had also broken his big toe badly before christmas so he was conscious of that.

He would have 5 or more weeks of skiing behind him, plenty of ski school so controls his speed well. Pistes here can be quite lumpy and uneven and whatever the cause he fell over and what ever way the weight of the ski (neither ski came off) came down it twisted his leg and sheered off a pice of his tibia where it connects with the knee. He is back in Ireland since last night and had surgery on it today (he had to have it within 5 days or it would heal incorrectly and he had to inject him self with blood thiner in the mean time!!).

At the end of the day it was just an awkward fall. Couple of us have had worse several times this week and come off unscathed so just bad luck.
