New SegaMega drive

Hey I got my brother one of these sega's for christmas and I'm looking for some more games. I'm totally clueless with all this retro gaming so bear with me.

Is there any sites ye can recommend for buying more cartridges and what price am I looking at per game? And if ye want to recommend any must have games that would be great.

And what is an emulator? Is it kind of like a hard drive with all the games installed and you just run them from it without the cartridges?

    Thanks!

eBay is probably your easiest bet for finding cheap cartridges, though TBH car boot sales/flea markets are cheaper still.

Google for "Top MegaDrive games" ;)

An emulator is a piece of computer software that pretends to be, for example, and old console. It's usually used to play old games on a PC, though it's generally not 100% accurate.

Markets are becoming a poorer source of games of late.
I would reccomend the shop Rage as a nice place to browse for a few carts but they are expensive.
Adverts is as great source too, you might have to wait a little while for the right one to come up and make sure you replace that little wannabe Mega drive with a proper one as soon as possible, it has some odd little habits.

    Hi Clondadlad!
    Welcome to the retro forum.
What age you are roughly if you don't mind me asking?

Just wondering if you were too young to have experienced gaming in the early 90s when the Mega Drive and Super Nintendo were all the rage!

Your Blaze console is basically the euro version of the Sega Firecore:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variations_of_the_Sega_Mega_Drive#Sega_Firecore

An important thing to note, is that is not compatible with the Everdrive MD, which is a special cartridge that will let you play almost any Sega Mega Drive or Master System games from an SD Card/Memory Card.

Here's a list of tested games that your console can and can't play:

    http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?9829-Sega-Firecore-quot-Tested-quot-Games-List

Hasn't been updated in a year though.

Also, make sure you don't buy 32X games, the 32X is separate add on that upgrades the power of the Sega Mega Drive, and it will not work with the Blaze console.

Besides the issues with it, its still a good way for casual gamers to get into Mega Drive games, and seems good value when you consider the amount of built in games you get with it.

If you get addicted like the rest of us, you could always upgrade to an original megadrive, to experience the games 100% like they were back in the day. (especially how they sounded)

The amount of stupid flame wars i had to endure while reading up about it on forums is ridiculous.

Getting back to this, what style games do you like to play?

    Beat em Up?
    Shooter?
    Action?
    Adventure?
    Sports?
    Racing?
    Platformer?
    Fantasy/RPG?

Let us know which of the built in games you like most so far, and we can start from there.

Here's the list of games on it -

    01. Alien Storm
    02. Altered Beast
    03. Columns
    04. ESWAT: City Under Seige
    05. Fatal Labyrinth
    06. Golden Axe
    07. Shadow Dancer
    08. Streets of Rage1
    09. Sonic Spinball
    10. Streets of Rage 3

Very odd list. I'd love to know how they were chosen! (Why no Streets of Rage 2 for a start?)

clonadlad, here are some of the consoles best, cheaper games that you should be able to buy on ebay for not very much at all.

    Sonic 1,2,3
    Streets of Rage 2
    Golden Axe 2
    Mercs
    Rocket Knight Adventures
    The Revenge of Shinobi
    Road Rash 2
    Thunderforce IV
    Castle of Illusion
    Alisa Dragoon
    Ghouls n Ghosts
    Ranger X
    Strider
    Comix Zone
    Super Fantasy Zone
    Castle of Illusion
    Micro Machines games
    Mega Bomberman
    EA Hockey
    Ristar
    Robocop Versus The Terminator
    Earthworm Jim games

Right, a LOT of info there to get through there. Thanks lads! I'm 19 so I wasn't really into that much gaming. I had a super nintendo which was class but I don't have a clue where it is now. I really wasn't planning on getting big into this but just wanted to know how to get a few games.

I've only managed to play Streets of Rage 3 and Sonic so far but enjoyed it. The xbox is taking all my attention so far this holiday!!

I'm a fan of every sort of game apart from fantasy/RPG.

I'm gonna have a gawk on ebay there now and see what the prices are like but thanks for all the help lads.

Good to see some younger blood on the forum, instead of just all old farts like the rest of us! :p

You should search the name of the game in youtube followed by Sega Mega Drive, and if you don't get a result try Sega Genesis instead (the American Name)

If you want to actually try the games out first, then this is probably the easiest way:

You'll need to install this plugin first and you're ready to go:

Here's some of my favourite games that weren't mentioned, no idea what price they go for:

Jungle Strike..................War game where you fly an Apache Helicopter, Better than the original Desert Strike imo)
The Chaos Engine:..........Classic Top Down Shooter
Flashback......................Cool Futuristic Platformer, pretty long too)
Prince of Persia..............Oldskool Platformer - Might be a bit more boring than the others, it was innovative though
    Jurassic Park..................platformer/shooter
Haunting.......................Crazy fun game where you haunt a house as a ghost and must freak out the family!!
Mortal Kombat 1/2/3.......Classic Beat Em Up
    Aladdin.........................platformer
    Zombies Ate My Neighbours.......fun shooter

There's absolutely no point in owning a megadrive if you don't have the stupidly good Gunstar Heroes.

Rocket Knight Adventures is another must have.

    .

I was trying to give the lad a list of affordable games!

If we're going down your route, sure I may as well throw in Alien Soldier, Eliminate Down, Gleylancer and Wily Wars :p

I still stand by my statement. It isn't that expensive and worth every cent.

Your first 3 links are the same Oísín, I hate when it happens to me, ctrl+c fail.

There should be some alarm that goes off if you copy the same text twice! :p

    Wtf! That's just odd!

I'm too lazy to go looking for them now.

The first link was £100 buy it now and the other was an ended auction someone actually bought at at something mad like £60.

Gunstar Heroes is a fantastic game and one of the MDs best. But somehow I don't think someone dipping their toes in retro gaming on someone elses behalf will be paying €35+ for one Megadrive title!

Jaysus, it used to go for 25. I've noticed the price of games creeping up lately. I blame morons willing to pay stupid prices.

Prices have definitely been going up. I find it especially odd as people are meant to have no money to spend...?

Nice for people with lots of stuff anyway. Pyongyang's 'smell of investment' seems to be coming true quicker than I'd originally thought it would.

    1 streets of Rage
    2 Streets of Rage 2
    3 Streets of Rage 3
    ...thats all you need ;)

Joking aside the the megagames carts (compliation ones that sega brought out ) are a cheap way of getting a few games for the collection.
The First 2 sonics are usually dirt cheap as well, and well worth a look.
Theres a decent online shop called infideals (google it, or do a search of A&R for more details) that are pretty fairly priced

Or you could place a hammer drill against your temple and pull the trigger...

Why not invest in good games,
    like
    Pit Fighter,
    Rise of the Robots,
    Golden Arse

Also Gynog , Granada Thunderforce IV and Slapfight MD(damn expensive) are great shooters.
(If you go to my youtubechannel http://www.youtube.com/user/luasdublin you can see a few of them in action)
Mercs, Devilcrash,Ghostbusters,Gauntlet IV,Micro Machines, Street Fighter II,MK are worth getting.
If you get a real megadrive (MD1) try and nab a powerbase converter/Mastersystem converter as theres a ton of great SMS games.(Also its worth it as with a bit of work you can mod the megadrive to play games 60 hz rather than 50..i.e. to play a little bit faster and fullscreen)

Are the prices really going up or is it just people buying stuff for christmas?

I was watching a Yoshi Island the other day and it went for nearly 70. Thats madness as its on ebay for like 30-40 as buy it nows and sometimes even cheaper. The same seller had a Zelda sell for nearly 150 and a secret of evermore for like 90!
Really peeved me off as well, as I was hoping to get the Secret of Evermore.

Yeah, you got schizophrenia or seizures?

    Forget Epilim or Olanzipine!

You just need to head to B&Q and grab a few things...

A set of craft knives, for cutting and peeling back the scalp.
    scalpels.jpg

A good quality craft saw, for the bone of the skull...
    pmf180a__02869_zoom.jpg

Or just pick up a ready made kit..

And then just release the demons!!!

Sorry for the boring post that's about to follow after the exciting ultra violence posts,

but there is an alternative way of getting Gunstar Heroes for the Mega Drive.

The Megagames 4 in 1 Cart:

Includes Flicky, Gunstar Heroes, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle and Altered Beast.

It could be rarer than the original cart itself though, but here be a nice bundle if you wanted a console also:,
    (no cases though).

Well, I think it's because most people know that despite my quite demeanor, my Black Mesa uniform and handiness with a crowbar and gravity gun, on the inside I am only having a laugh...

For all you know I'm up, in my gamesroom at night, playing SoR, SoR2 and 3, the Golden Axe games and the Final Fight series until dawn...

I agree, it's an unlikely scenario but it could be true...

Actually, it's rare that I play videogames before 1 in the morning!
My house is a terrible house for a gamer, terrible...

Re-runs of cookery programmes are rated higher than a blast of Robotron...

It's hard to believe that such places can still exist, where Rick Stein is placed before Rick Dangerous, where Master Chef is more commonly on the tv than Master Chief...
