black screen after windows updates

Something odd happening with my vista laptop. About once or twice a week i turn it on to find it boots but the screen goes black instead of displaying the log in screen. Something odd happening with my vista laptop. About once or twice a week i turn it on to find it boots but the screen goes black instead of displaying the log in screen. I have to reboot into safe mode and do a system restore to fix it. The reason always seems to be that an automatic windows update was applied after the restore point was created and the auto update seems to be the problem.
I have windows update set to notify only so no update should be applied and when i check for new updates after the system restore it doesnt show any

The problem never occurs when i do manual updates.

I've tried scans with Windows Defender, Malwarebytes and Prevx but nothing sinister showing up.
any ideas?
