You can change your Amazon address and have a go that way. It is to do with publishing rights I believe. It is meant for UK addresses only. Everyone else is supposed to buy from the US store.

In work, our IP address is a UK one so I usually download them from work which is handy :D

I have an Irish IP and an Irish credit card but once I changed my Kindle account to a UK one and added a UK address to my Amazon account (belonging to a relative) I was good to go :)

Same here, I would say if you just give any UK address you should be fine, just make sure you dont use it as your 1 click delivery address.

isn't it cheaper from the US store than the UK store?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,379 ✭✭✭CarrickMcJoe

Yes the Kindle itself is cheaper from US and delivery is very fast, but a lot of UK and Irish books are not available on the US site.
I bought in US and then changed my Amazon address to a N. Ireland one.

Bit of a nightmare this Kindle lark. Amazon.co.uk for some reason won't supply electronics to Ireland. We ordered 2 from Amazon.com and of course, they're registered to the US and all download prices were in USD and considerably more expensive than UK prices.
As the previous respondents have said the only way to register the lads at Amazon.co.uk is to disassociate ourselves from home completely.
If ye already have an account at Amazon uk, remove the home address and phone number completely. Use any old made up address in the Bean an don't forget a postcode to go with it, pluck a phone number out of thin air and hey presto.
The next time ye click onto Amazon.co.uk and click "manage my Kindle" a banner at the top will tell ye that the device is registered at Amazon.com but underneath there will be another asking if you would like to transfer yer registration to co.uk. Simples...

You will still need to keep the correct billing address on the account for your credit card in order to purchase books - presumably it's an Irish one? It works fine for me but some other people haven't been so lucky according to reports. Maybe mine is ok because I buy and send to both addresses (NI & here) regularly and have done for years?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 killalabay

No probs so far. me credit card is Irish and the billing address is here at home of course, yet I was able to order a heap of books yesterday without any bother and far cheaper for the same titles in comparison to paying in USD.

Changing to a Uk address worked for me for a few days. Then I started getting a message saying my kindle was outside the UK and I was no longer able to download.

Most books I want aren't available on the Kindle :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 951 ✭✭✭MiniNukinfuts

you could just create a fake account, use a proxy to fake a UK connection, put in an english address, the for credit card info, put in all your details but put the billing address to a UK address. The don't ever send bills so you're safe. It works for me

The kindle can handle PDFs but you could also use something like Calibre to convert them from some other format

Thanks for all the above advise. A good help in making my decision. Now I can't seem to get an extended protection policy from the US site. Or am I missing something?

Kindle cover is only sold in and covered in Amazon's OU. So .com for US .co.uk for UK etc. No cover for Ireland, but one of the local mobile and gadget insurers might cover it - CPP and the likes.

By the way of you're buying a Kindle, would be way cheaper in Tesco and Argos than importing from .com. Argos even offer extended warranties.

That's what I was figuring. Thanks. I wouldn't normally touch extended warrenties but this is for a 11 year old so nice to be covered in case it's dropped (or thrown!):)

My Kindle came from the US in April and worked absolutely fine till tonight. I downloaded books from .com site and no issues but tonight my device isn't recognised on log in atall. My credit card was renewed in August but I've updated that. i've restarted etc but to no avail. when i check settings it shows i am registered. Any ideas.. i'm distracted from it.

Are you sure you updated on Amazon's Kindle page? Fom experience I know that if you update it on your account settings page it won't automatically update the Kindle payment settings. On the Amazon.com page, move your mouse over the Sign-In button, theres a link to Manage Kindle, and you should see Kindle payment options in there :)

Its just piss poor marketing by Amazon. They have decided that .com will deal with the whole world, apart from those places that have Amazon sites in situ eg Amazon.co.uk, .fr .de .It etc.

The 'copyright issues' excuse is just that, an excuse. For Ireland those are better dealt with from the UK as the book industry and legislation was similar for generations.

I was all set to buy a kindle but did a comparison between the com and the Uk sites and then, deciding the UK one was what I wanted, tried to go through the hoops to buy there, but without success. There comes a time when you have to ask if Amazon is really interested in selling here.

Other countries have similar issues, maybe even worse. For example Belgians and Swiss have to buy their French books through US not France!!

Its all strange as usually Amazon is good at consumer service. Seems the internal bureaucrats and lawyers got at this one first....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭Xzen

You can use your UK Kindle in Ireland (though unsupported) with very little tweaking on your acc, though I'm sure im not allowed to say how here ;)

As for the Swiss,. they can get Kindles on amazon Germany and France's sites.

You're right about the book limitations between US and UK etc, its a pain :(
Though you can't seriously think a company as big as amazon limits customers like that intentionally? - kinda goes against the idea of why businesses exist: to make money :)

It's down the publishers in the end. Like DVDs/Blu-rays they impliment regionalisation. It's not fair or nice but that's just the world we live in.

I don't believe its down to the publishers at all. Thats just an excuse. Publishers market the UK and Ireland as a unit. It makes no sense for them to direct sales to a US com site that doesn't reflect their UK/Irl marketing. And why should they market ebooks differently to how they market paper books.?

Yes thanks all down to account management. So confusing.

Right so I just got a kindle and I'm having the same problem as many other's,I have an account on amazon UK but it's just set my kindle store to the US one and they dont have the books I want. I'm not really hot on the whole tech thing, proxys etc so I'm not even going to attempt that, I also have no relations in the UK to get an address from - except northern Ireland, would that work,no? I would have definitely opted for a different ebook reader if I'd of known it was this complicated! :(

Yep a Northerin Irish address would work as its part of the UK.

Also, have you stayed in any UK hotels? Know any addresses? ;)

You could probably use a UK VPN (eg1, eg2 , eg3 )this would trick it into believing its in the UK.

Or probably could call them and say you're on extended work/holiday in Ireland or some-such but your main/home address is xyz in the UK :)

Thank you :) I'll try using the UK VPN and see how that goes. I was thinking the same about saying I was on holiday here but they've sent me an email asking me to verify my UK address! Oops..

I often get samples for Kindle by browsing on laptop etc. and they have put up a notice that I can now shop for e books on amazon.co.uk. Prices seem to be the same.

Yeah you can now use Kindles with Amazon.co.uk,

However if you are already on .com this means actually moving the account to .co.uk for your kindle and I'm unsure if you can switch back later.

At the end of the day I'll stick with .com as selection seems better

If you have a parcel motel account you can use their Belfast address on Amazon UK to buy kindle books.

I've been doing this for a while and had no problems with it, it switched over automatically.

You can easily switch between address in your address book if you want to change back.

You don't need any UK address to do this, Kindle can be used on amazon.co.uk for the past few weeks without any problems

Does anyone know what's the current situation with buying books for kindle. Do you still need a Uk address to buy from Amazon UK. I know someone who has been asked to send a copy of her passport to continue buying. Has anyone heard of this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 killalabay

Never heard of the like. Think Amazon may be getting ideas above their station by asking for a mans' passport and would certainly be met with a response in the negative.
I've been using Kindle with a relatives English address for over two years now and not a bother but for new users i'm afraid we still don't exist. Tis Amazon.com for those of us that don't have the ability to furnish an British or Northern address.

That's not the case, and hasn't been since February or March this year. That was when Amazon offered people with Irish addresses the opportunity to re-register with .co.uk. I've been buying ebooks from the UK since March.

Thanks for replies. Delighted to hear we can now buy Kindle content officially from Amazon UK. It makes so much more sense and does away with the need for dodgy Uk addresses. That is the only explanation I can think of for the email this morning. I have been checking the internet and can only find sellers who have to supply this info. The person who got the email is only an occasional buyer so it's hard to see the need for such info. Needless to say, she has no intention of scanning her passport and emailing it to anyone. I am going to change my address to my own and will tell her to try the same

A passport proves citizenship but gives no information about address or location. If Amazon are asking for passports, they are way beyond what is acceptable. I think it is much more likely that such emails are phishing attempts, to steal your identity. Never scan your passport in response to such mails.

Is she sure that the email is not a fake email?

I order from amazon.co.uk with my kindle but regularly switch over to amazon.com if a book I want is not available on amazon.co.uk and never got an email like it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 chrisss

I don't think the email was fake but I guess we will never know for sure. Rather than scan in the passport( I think we all agree that would have been incredibly stupid) she just changed to an Irish address that matched her IP address and ordered again without problem. I have been buying myself without problem for years but always make sure to keep wireless turned off except for the few seconds when a book is downloading. I do know she forgot to turn wireless off. I do now know from checking this out that in Ireland we can now buy from Amazon.com or from Amazon.co.uk
