I placed an ad on Adverts.ie a few weeks ago for an iPhone I was selling. Within a few hours I had a few private messages from a guy interested in buying it and we agreed on a price of €350. He insisted on sending it by registered post and wanted it sent to his Son in Dublin for his Birthday 2 days later.

The next morning I had €350 in my Paypal account so I went to the post office and sent the phone with registered post just like he told me too. Soon after I sent the phone Adverts.ie have emailed me saying to avoid all contact with this man and that he has a few banned accounts on Adverts.ie and is a known fraudster. After finding this out I immediately transferred the money into my bank account.

Later on that evening, I received an email from Paypal saying that the guy did a credit card reversal and my account was -€350 in negative balance.

A case was then opened by Paypal and my account was on hold until they investigated the matter. I told them all the details and told them that the guy was now banned from Adverts.ie.

I sent them a picture of the tracking number receipt from AnPost and I also sent them the guys signature showing proof of delivery.

This morning, Paypal have ended giving this con man his credit card reversal of €350. I rang Paypal and asked why they did this because I had proof of delivery etc. and they are going to get back to me in 24hrs.

I am now down an iPhone and €350.

Anyone here in this situation before or have any advice for me would be greatly appreciated.

More than likely it's not his card or Paypal account. This type of con most often works by means of fraud, using a stolen credit card or a hacked Paypal account.

If that is the case, you will not win, or get your money or phone back.

I got on to Paypal again and they said there is nothing more they can do because I have sent the phone to a different address than the one on his Paypal account.

This con man has got a valuable phone of me for free and I am now down €350.

I never had to contact those guys and even I don't know whether They'll be interested
in your case but try them anyway

I have and they were delighted, the ended up getting them for a lot more than one transaction.

Didn't get anything back but was glad they were caught.

Ask in the local station who looks after fraud give them all your evidence, phone numbers if you have them. They should check out the address.
Might get lucky and they have an Aladdin's Cave of stuff including your iphone.

I'll get to the Garda station later and I'll explain all to them. I can't believe Paypal took his side on this with me showing proof of delivery and telling them that he has been banned from Adverts.ie etc...

This just ruined my Xmas and I feel sick.

basically you have not showed proof of delivery as the address you sent to wasnt the one shown in the buyer's paypal account (and was sent to you when you recieved payment). If you had proof of delivery to the address supplied through Paypal you would be refunded under paypal's seller protection.

All I can do now is go to the Guards and tell them the story. It's basically a form of theft and I'm hoping they can sort something out.

I had a cursory glance at the link below. It's UK specific in terms of FSA etc. but may offer some pointers.

I have just been to the Garda station and I have given them all the details about this con man and they are going to look into it for me.

I will keep you posted on how I get on.
