annoying cd/dvd writer

    hi,
    i bought a netbook over christmas. i then decided to buy an external dvd/cd writer. i got one in pc world: 8x external slim multiformat dvd/cd writer. i installed a pc game no problem but then when i went to play a dvd it wouldnt let me. it said that i had to download a decoder. i clicked "web help" and then it brought me 2 a site that sold windows 7 home premium and its saying that i have 2 buy that 2 play a dvd.
    this makes no sense 2 me at all? could an of you help? thanks
