The number of Gardaí policing the countries roads is to be scaled back.

The reduction in the Traffic Corps comes despite warnings against such a move from the Road Safety Authority.

Its increased strength in recent years is credited as a major contributor to falling road deaths which are expected to drop below 200 this year, for the first time since records began.

According to reports this morning, the number of Gardaí in the traffic corps has already been cut from 1,200 to 950, and is set to decrease further in 2012.

We've already lost 400 and it will just go back to the old ways of one Divisional Traffic unit per division instead of two and three district traffic units.

Cutting TC numbers was always on the cards. With retirements, no recruitment and new rostering they will need members from somewhere and TC is the only place they can get them.

That being said, if road deaths rise by even one then the RSA will crucify the Government.

    Interesting times ahead.......

Do you see a time that when the TC members are back with the regular that they would be the designated drivers then for the units they would be on? and the full-timers who are on Chiefs' permission would decrease when their would then be fully trained TC members who would have relevant driving courses done available with the regular units to do the driving?

No K4S I couldn't. Chiefs is gone nationwide with no exceptions from Jan 31st. Most stations have a good compliment of official CBD1 or 2 drivers.

If and when we go back then we'll just be part of the unit.

And every other member they can get their hands on. Personally I don't mind I guess......I joined to be a Garda and once thats what I'm doing then I'm quite happy.....TC or regular doesn't bother me.
