couldnt find a thread on this

im in mechanical engineering level 7 course in DIT
is there a 3rd year project to do and if so,
can you decide what it is or do they give a list of possible things to do.
in one of the labs a saw someone had built a stirling engine as a project. that looked too easy though.
would be cool to build a Bond car or Kitt, and get it graded.
    cheers

Yes there is a 3rd year project.
you chose your own project and then youve to present your idea/project to the lecturer incharge of projects.
This year its kevin delaney and jim mcgovern who are looking after it.
They determine wether or not you can pursue your chosen idea.

Yes there is a final year project to complete. The best thing to do is have a chat with some of the lecturers about it. Most people do a design and build project. There are loads of projects in the library from past years.
Any other questions just let me know I finished the honours course last year.

    nice one guys
    cheers
wasnt sure how people would take that.
i have Delaney for instrumentation, il have a chat with him i think. didnt know who to be asking really, and its two years away,
il probably do something with the stirling engine or something, they're just cool

as for the car idea, its possible that im thinking too big, but glad i wasnt ridiculed for it so far,
    :)

So you're in first year? I finished the course last year. If you ask any o the lecturers, I'm sure they'll give you the booklet outlining what you need to do. I'd go into it in more details, but it's modified slightly every year, so there isn't much point.
Whatever happens, you'll have to present your ideas to both your course, and lecturers who are supervising the projects. Your project supervisor will have experience which directly relates to your project. In my year, some people designed machines, some went for more electronic based projects, others more research based. It's quite similar to the leaving cert project in some respects, particularly if you're doing a design and make project, but the research/theory/mathematical element is a much bigger part, and being great in a workshop won't drag you through.

First year is OK if you've done physics, engineering and tech drawing for the leaving cert. Second year is a big step up, and some people find Applied Energy Systems difficult, but the notes are absolutely excellent. (Still have them bound, sitting beside me here a few years later) Third year takes a big step up again, so be aware of that! if you put the work in at the start, you'll find it much easier. Any questions, send me a PM.

    nice one kevin,
il do that, didnt think they'd have booklets on it.
i was thinking that they'd just tell us some time next year to pick from a few ideas.
whatever i do, hopefully itl be something that will evolve into a business plan/something meaningful and not just a race to pass.

Yeah, im still trying to get studying, build a foundation and work from there, no point going into 2nd year without knowing your integration etc.

and hopefully there is a good bit of freedom when it comes to projects, although finding an idea is nearly the harder part.

    cheers for the replies
