Just noticed that the i7 series of processor never gets a mention in the builds that get suggested on here. Just wondering why that is - is there some kind of problem or issue with them, or are they just overpriced for the performance boost they offer?

most builds done here are for gaming.

the best CPU you need for gaming - i5 2500k. its a golden spot.

i7 2600k is very expensive and it does not give any performance over 2500k cpu in gaming.

    i7 2600k = i5 2500k + hyper threading ( hyper threading is not used for games )

i7 is great if you do a lot of video encoding etc.

p.s. 2500k is just screaming for overcloking. with most better motherboards and 2500k, you can OC it with a puxh of a button to 4.2ghz

Aha - I had a feeling it would be something like that - thank you for clearing it up :)

Hyper-threading can actually negatively affect gaming performance so in some cases the i7 is worse than the i5-2500k for gaming. Anything heavily threaded will benefit from it though.

Why do they make gold plated watercooling blocks? To compensate for other "departments" which may be lacking.

My bet is you don't know what your talking about, just going on what you've heard and the fact that 7 is a higher number than 5.

Have a look at the games. In some cases (starcraft 2 for example) the i5 2500k preforms better ;)

You mean the rig which is basically an expensive overpriced dell? LOL. grats on paying probably 2x-3x the price on components :D

Have an i7 with liquid cooling, have it clocked @ 3.8GHz as it seems to run everything fine, but so does my housemate's machine which has an i5. We both have the same gpus and ram to spare.

What I did notice was my machine is a lot smoother with the ssd. If you're forced to choose I'd get the i5 over the i7 and put the savings into an ssd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,006 ✭✭✭beno619

Putting all this trolling aside.. The i5 gets such a good rating because of the performance/value and "overclockability" over the i7, it's the people's champ and has one several user and editor choice awards and that's a fact .

Of course the i7 is better, but for an extra €80, 99 % of people will say the i5 is a better deal.

Though not as bad as the poor guy who asked whether AMD or Intel was better and asked for it not to turn into a flamewar.

now to wrap all up we need "which is better? NVIDIA or ATI GPUs?"

@tototroll, the situation is like this. The i7 has hyper-threading. THAT'S THE ONLY DIFFERENCE. It's great on highly multi-threaded apps because it has double the amount of registers, allowing for super-fast context switching and simultaneous process scheduling.

The €100 question: is the i7 worth the extra ~ €100? Yes. If your work depends on it. For everything else, put the €100 quid towards something else and get the i5. Be it a bigger and better SSD, better gfx card, speakers, monitor, case, water cooling, chair, mouse, keyboard, headphones, games, porn, or towards savings for future upgrades to all of the above. It's definitely not worth spending an extra five-score just to troll on boards, I feel I need to tell you that.

Really, for most things, the i5 is excellent. Yes, hyperthreading gives you about a 60% boost in applications that will use it (which aren't many), but it also gives you:

    10°C higher temperatures under load.
0.2V higher voltage requirement for stability (roughly)

To be honest, I'd take the i5 and get a higher overclock, unless I was on water. (which I am, so I'd get an i7 :P)

I'll admit I kind of wish in some ways I'd gotten an i7. But I'd have to turn off hyperthreading for some games so it'd have been quite a bit of hassle so probably not worth it for the speed increases I'd see with some of the jobs I'd put the PC doing.

    Edit: Ah, a troll.

Someone's altaccount (or a very ill-mannered new poster) has just declared "war" with a Mod while simultaneously calling his bluff and effectively necroing a thread that should have been left to die in order to do it.

Darwin Awards. This thread just became a victim of them. As has the troll - come back from your "holiday" with the same attitude and you'll be given a much longer one next time. You're just being incredibly silly over this whole thing.

    Goodnight.
