Job Oppertunity given to someone else

I feel extremely down in the dumps at the moment. I spent ages looking for a job after I graduated from my degree, Im saving for a masters, so had to move home away from my friends, social life ect. It was pretty hard but I knew sacrifices have to be made I accept that.

So I got a job as a christmas temp. Perfect, chance for an oppertunity to be kept on. I worked very hard, it was demanding work, long hours. Was bulled mercilessly by a manger there whos gone now, but made my day hell. Again I had worked harder jobs so I accepted its part of life.

my contract was up christmas eve and so I asked the manager what the story was. About a month and a three weeks after I started, another temp was taken on. She had actually worked in the same branch before in dublin, but she was very inexperienced, didnt know where things were, nervous with customers, which is grand, I was exactly the same when I started new jobs. However when the manager told me she didnt know and I said, grand but Im free all year, no commitments so Im really interested in staying on, she said. great.

anyway, come today I was scheduled to work 3 days after my contract, she called me in and told me, that I was finished in the next few days and the temp who came a month and a three weeks after me, was being kept, and her reason was, she worked in the same branch before. I just feel very down about this. Firstly, the girl is balancing college with this job, and she's from a different county, 3 hours away so goes home often.

I could accept easily my contract being over. I was a temp, as was she. But Im just annoyed that the manager did this, when Ive worked longer, even covered 90 percent of the sick days for people and perfomed well. I of course didnt show any displeasure at the decision, was polite and all. But I think it was bad form.

Now I'll be jobless again in a few days, unless I fnd something, my idea of a masters is gone. Ive got thousands to raise and thats the course alone, never mind accomodation. My friends are all away in the city where I went to college, so Im alone for new years and Im just getting out of a messy relationship.

Im not pitying myself by the way. It just seems Ive nothing right now and lost myself. My job, friends, money to do anything. Masters is a lifetime away and finding a new job is so daunting. Im handing out cv's everyday now, getting the same reply. Not hiring or no response.

I guess I feel a little double crossed by employers. Granted they can keep on who they want. But I thought there would be fairness. She was only here for 2 weeks.

Just looking for some advice on what to do, how to pick myself up out of this rut. Im so sad and frightened right now, its hard to explain

The other temp may have contacts in the company, i know its not really fair but sometimes its just 'who you know'. You did your best and thats all you coudl have done. Just stay positive. The jobs market is tough but your day will come :)

I'm sorry to hear what happened. Sometimes life just isn't fair and it is galling when you put yourself through all that you've described and have received nothing but a smack in the mouth in return. As Pretty Polly says, maybe this temp has contacts in the company. You really never know what's going on in the background. It's just terribly unfair that you've gotten no thanks for the effort you put in.

All you can do is dust yourself down and view this as a temporary blip. Yeah I know, it's easier said than done but life doesn't always go to plan. I remember being bitterly disappointed years ago when a job I really wanted and was being lined up for evaporated due to external circumstances. In hindsight, it was the best thing that ever happened to me but I'm not going to go all Pollyanna on you.

On the positive side, you've got some invaluable work experience under your belt; that will stand to you and perhaps be a just reward for what you did in your job. Maybe you won't get to do that masters you're talking about as soon as you'd like but you'll still get to do it. It's never too late. You might think time's running out for you but that's not true. You might find yourself out of your comfort zone, away from familiar surroundings, family and friends but that's not to say that all is lost. No matter where you go, you've always got the potential to meet new people and make new friends.

I hope you take the opportunity to meet up with some close family member or friend and have a good old chat/rant/cry and get it all off your chest. Things might seem dreadfully bleak just now but once you get over the shock and worry of this, you will be alright.

As above, she might have friends from when she worked in the branch before.

Or they may consider the fact that she worked there before = she had started there earlier (even though she left and came back) and done last in last out.

You left on good terms, so it's a reference at the least, or, who knows, maybe you'll end up working there again down the line (as this girl) and then be the 'senior' one.

    It's too bad I guess. That's life.

Just to point out, the poor working relationship you had with your manager could have gone against you.
