changed the modem wireless password a while back and dont remmeber seeing any fire wall.Is it just a matter of connect and play or will I have to open ports etc??

UPC never used netgear modems, they used to install netgear routers a few years ago and thats maybe what you meant? In answer to your question, as with any modem router or stand alone router you shouldnt need to disable any nat setting in the device - it would improve the experience - but it shouldnt cause any real connection issues leaving it on. :)
