Was reversing the other day and hit a parked 3 door ford fiesta 98 on the passenger side. Left a fair dent and scratch so i'm wondering how to go about repairing the damage. I've never had an accident before so was wondering if I should pay a panel beater or contact my insurance company. If anyone has some advice or could recommend a reasonably good value panel beater in north Dublin area id appreciate it.

If you get it done without involving insurance it may benefit you in the long run. That said bodywork can be pricey.

Has the owner of the Fiesta indicated what way they want it sorted? At the end of the day the owner of the car you hit will decide who does the repair work.

Of course you can decide if you want to pay for it out of your own pocket or let them claim off your insurance. Honestly, I cannot see the owner of a 14 year old car going to a main dealer to have it repaired. Logic would say they will get it done by local body shop.

If you are paying out of your own pocket make sure you get an invoice for the work and pay the body shop directly.

Pointless going through your insurance, they would probably call it an economic write off for a settlement of little if anything more than the excess on your policy. You'd end up paying pretty much everything from your own pocket and possibly losing your no claims bonus too. Ask them to get a quote, if its excessive, offer to buy the car from them at market value before the crash ~€750 if it was in really good nick, then sell the car on to recover as much of the costs as possible, might be possible to get €400 or even €500 back on it.
