Got this laptop for my son for xmas. All ok with it on xmas day, conected in net etc, up and running fine. Now, however it has completely slowed down ( not net, my own laptop working fine) Takes ages to switch on, ages to open a file etc, is just running really really slow.

Has anyone any idea what this could be ? Only thing that has been downloaded was minecraft by himself and security was installed before this.

Im at a loss here so any advice would be appreciated.

check in windows safe mode. Also try only on AC without battery and on battery only. Let us know if there is any difference

I bought this laptop 2 months ago, never had any problems with it, always been super fast.

What anti virus software are you using? I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, its light on resources.

Hi, Never got it sorted, had to return it. got an exchange, new one is working great. Think you are right about the windows updates, it was downloading a load of these when it stalled and never seemed to recover. Thanks for your help though.

MSE is cool but is only an AV program. I am using Webroot complete right now, extremely light on resources also. But sounds like the OP's issue was startup pains - windows updates and things of that nature.

When reinstalling windows or launching a new pc:

-run all windows updates, reboot as many times as necessary until it can no longer find any updates.
-Uninstall any unwanted crapware/trial antivirus program
-Reboot and install your security program
-Check your manufacturer site for any necessary drivers windows may have missed. reboot if necessary.
-Defrag the system (preferably using a boot-time defragger at this critical point, something like the trial version of PerfectDisk)
-Install your preferred list of programs
    -Check for updates again.
-Defrag the system and run a registry clean.

I got a Toshiba satellite c660 2ef for xmas aswell and its very slow. It was purchased in argos has a 2ghz celeron processor but only 1gb of RAM, I think this is the problem for me and maybe you. As soon as I started it up on Christmas day it was fine, got windows installed and it was as slow as it is now. I believe window took up 80% of the memory leaving it with little memory to work with. I still have yet to buy new Ram cards and test my theory. Hope I have been of some assistance

Also from what I know minecraft uses lots of RAM loading up the landscape, changing the distance to short dramatically speeds up the game along with fast graphics and going to the computer on the start menu and right clicking on it, scroll down to properties then go to advanced settings and the tick the box do whats best for performance. Windows will then change to a low windows 98 style layout, this helps alot with minecraft too.
