Bike storage in an appartment ?

    Hi,

I am currently looking for somewhere to rent in Dublin on the southside and am wondering about bike storage in apartments. I cycle everywhere so I had been searching only for places with rear access => generally semi-d or detached houses rather than apartments. This does however significantly narrow the available properties. So I'm wondering if an apartment might be acceptable after all. I'm thinking in particular about security for my bike (it cost ~€900) so I would like it to be kept indoors in a secure location. What is the general standard of bike facilities in apartments in Dublin? Or does it vary from development to development? I remember a friend having a wheel buckled while it was locked indoors in a bike shed in an apartment, also it seems access to any bike shed would be very insecure so a thief would have plenty of time to get some heavy duty cutting equipment given that they know where the bike will be every night. Anyone have any thoughts ?

    Thanks,

    Usjes.

Bike sheds are for crappy commuter bikes only. Most appartments will have room somewhere for at least one bike although some management companies don't like you bringing your bike indoors because they are bad people.

Ive seen pics of wall mounting kits that look like the perfect solution, never seen them online or in shops though. May not be much use if the apartment walls are hollow plasterboard..

Toppeak Dual Touch stand for the win.

Tidy solution that allows two bikes to be stored in your apartment - no fuss/mess/angry landlord...

...or they don't like polyfill-ing every five minutes because of handlebar/pedal gouges out of the plasterboard or scratches to the stainless steel panels in lifts (permanent)

I've seen a lot of damage caused by bikes in appt buildings...

Surely most apartments these days have basement car parks? Perhaps you could install on of these?

Some do, some don't. You would have to be nuts to leave any kind of half decent bike in one though, all they give is cover for thieves to have plenty of time to work on locks. I keep my bikes in apartment also, I don't know anyone with any kind of decent bike who doesn't.

See my edit above...not cheap though.

I doubt any management company who is strict on bikes would be helpful enough to let you install one of them, and again the protection and time to work on locks afforded in underground car parks would make it unlikely to be secure enough. Install one of these and every bike thief for miles would be around in no time wondering what goodies were inside.

Underground storage is where bikes go to get stolen.

Despite years of renting in Dublin, I've never been in an apartment complex that had underground bike storage (or any other type of bike storage for that matter) with a level of security sufficient for the storage of anything - including beater commuter bikes, whatever about a bike costing several hundred to several thousand euro.

Gouges and scrapes to internal building surfaces? Never seen or contributed to them - wouldn't let the generally poorly kept common areas of an apartment building get one of my bikes dirty (temporary) or scratch it up (permanent).
