    Hi there,
I'm doing an essay on OCD at the moment and I am just a bit confused when it comes to CBT for OCD as a lot of the texts I am looking at mention cognitive therapy and also behaviour therapy and then talk about CBT within various parts of the text. Is CBT more of an umbrella term for the various cognitive and behavioural therapies regardless if they only include cognitive strategies or behavioural ones in isolation or is it something else in its own right? If anyone could help clear this up for me I would really appreciate it because I can't seem to determine it from what I've read so far
    Thank you

CBT is an umbrella term for Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapies, as can be seen in the names of the organisations for CBT - the BABCP, the IABCP, the EABCT. The Americans tend to use "cognitive therapy" more as they were more psychoanalytical in the past and not so much behavioural.

CBT encompasses Cognitive Therapy whether Beckian or Ellisian, Behaviour Therapy, and also the newer therapies like DBT and ACT as well as Behavioural Activation etc.

the main evidence based treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) which is a Behavioural treatment. Most people wouldnt' ignore the cognitive elements in treatment.

OCD Ireland, mentioned a few times on this forum, will have information.
