How long does a provisional license last?

    Hi all,

I've had my provisional driving license since Febuary of last year (10) before the new law came in.

I still haven't taken my full driving test but have been told if I don't within a certain length of time my provisional license will expire.

Is this true and when could I find out if I still have my provisional?

    Thanks

they expire after two years and after that you need to renew it. The forms are in your local motor tax office.

Do I just renew it, I don't have to retake my provisional test do I?

no don't worry, you just fill in the form, sort out your photos and you're grand, no tests involved!

Well thats a lot of stress taken off.

Thanks a lot, hopefully be getting that done if I don't pass my full driving test before Febuary (which is unlikely at this stage tbf).

All you need to do is apply for your second learner permit (*not* provisional licence, that's what they used to be called), if your first one expires (it lasts two years). You need to go to the MTO, fill out the relevant forms, provide new passport photos, pay the fee of €15 - the second learner permit will last another two years.

You don't need to redo your theory test (unless it's been more than 5 years since your first LP expired), and the new laws still won't apply - they only apply if you obtained your *first* learner permit on or after 4th April 2011.

    Good luck, and Happy Christmas!
