Got 2 tickets from the family. Boom! Cannot wait. Never seen him as he hasn't toured Europe since '91 or '92. I freakin' love TP and the Heartbreakers. Coolest man alive. Listening to him since I was 14 or 15 (about 20 years). I rarely talk about him to people but when I find out anyone is a Tom Petty fan, they go up in my estimation. Some of the most perfect songs ever. For the uninitiated look up American Girl, Mary Jane's Last Dance, Complex Kid, Change of Heart and Here Comes My Girl. And then kick yourself for not having bought tickets. And if you don't like what you hear, go to hell. You have no soul :)

This reflects badly on the people of Ireland. Not enough coolness to go around, I suppose.

American Girl = The Stokes - Last Night
Mary Jane = RHCP - Dani California
both Petty songs obviously ripped off, he never bothered suing though

Cos he's cool, innit. And his songs so superior, he didn't notice the plagiarism. And because he wouldn't listen to that sort of radio station. And maybe he is going to sue, but is so laid back, hasn't got around to calling his lawyer.

Most people say who if I mention his name? Yet when his music comes on the radio they all say "Oh so that him? Love that song"! Combined trip to New York 18 months ago to go see him in Madison Square Gardens and what a night:D Thankfully he listened to the European fans this year and will be here shortly! Great concert guaranteed;)

So, you basically just started this tread just to show off? lol

Anyway, I'm not a huge fan of his but I do like some of his songs. Breakdown is a pretty cool song.

Not showing off. Just happy. Keep missing the legends. This time I won't.

Love the guy and can't wait to see him...

Have you seen the 4 hour documentary on him and the heartbreakers?

I've seen a few, but I don't think any were that long. Is that "Runnin' Down a Dream"? Need to get that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,416 ✭✭✭Jimmy Iovine

Only noticed there now that he's coming over. I'd love to go and see him.

I'll have to see though. MASSIVE summer ahead. The Boss, RHCP, Tom Petty, the Euros and the Olympics as well. Money will be very tight.

What are his live shows like? The only live show I've seen was him at the Superbowl ha.

EDIT: Just saw that it's his first European tour in 20 years. Jaysus, I suppose no one here has seen him live then.

    Cool.

Not a vintage year down the bill, maybe, but Jefferson Starship and Tom Petty would've been excellent I think. I suspect Genesis may have been too noodly for my tastes. They don't do rock concerts like that anymore.

Tickets still on sale for tom petty, which surprised me some. Anyway, i got mine. Really looking fwd to the gig in The Point.

Genesis live were a lot better than the albums.

And tom Petty rocked. I'd barely heard of him back then.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played the Point on 18th and 19th March 1992. I was at the two shows.

Both incredible gigs, 2.5 hrs each but with the exact same setlist.

Ive started to purchase his albums that I missed out on over the years.

Ive always though "Full Moon Fever" was his best but "Wildflowers" is equally as good.

The "live anthology" is great value for money and a great introduction for new fans.

"Running Down a Dream" is also the most comprehensive documentry your likely to see from any band/artist.

    Roll on June 7th.

Great gig, I really enjoyed it. Tom played a good selection of the older stuff along with not too much of the new stuff.

You'd miss Howie Epstein from the lineup though, especially for his backing vocals.

Great show, vocals were a bit ropey at the start from block a, I'm never gonna book O2 priority tickets again we were over in the corner of block a. What a joke priority my arse, great gig though would love to see them in Cork

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,064 ✭✭✭poundhound

I dont think Howie was missed at all, Scott Thurston was great on the harmonies and on "Handle with Care".

Steve Ferrone is definitley a better drummer than Stan Lynch.

On another note, Itunes is selling a tour edition of Mojo.
It includes a bonus 12 live tracks from the 2010 Mojo tour of the states.

For me, last night was my 3rd Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers show.
    Roll on number 4!

I would've loved to have met Tom, I only saw this morning that apparently the band met with members of the Highway Companions Club at 5pm. I would've joined in a flash if I'd known.

Is anyone here a member of the HCC or did you hear how the 5pm meet went?

5:00 yesterday? In the venue, presumably?
I'm not sure about Tom, but the band definitely didn't arrive in the venue until after 6:00.

Wow. Brilliant gig. Was worried that they might be mailing it in, but it was fantastic. Tom's voice was never "powerful" so age hasn't affected it at all. Looked like they really enjoyed it. Opening blast of "Here Comes My Girl" through "Mary Jane's Last Dance" to a finale of "American Girl", rock and roll guitar heaven. Not sure if it's something they "do" but I loved when they dropped Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well" into the middle of procedings. Thank you Tom and the guys. Legends. :)

They have been doing "Oh Well" for a long time. They did it at their 30th Anniversary concert in 2006.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,358 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

I was at the concert. It was a brilliant gig. Tom was on form as were his band. Mike Campbell was phenomenal on lead guitar. Scott Thurston was very effective on the harmony vocals. There were about four songs I did not know - that is quite acceptable! I would love if he had done the following songs: Breakdown, A Face in the Crowd, Into the Great Wide Open, Don't Come Around Here No More and Don't Do Me Like That. That aside, I could not really fault the playlist. I liked his take on Oh Well and Handle with Care.

Youtube is full of videos from the show now.

I was at their last Dublin gig 20 years ago in the Point - same place but different venue. For my money, this week's performance was better than the first time.

    Review from www.tompetty.com

    Dublin, IE
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers made their triumphant return to Europe Thursday night, rocking a sold-out show at Dublin's O2 Arena to one of the best crowds of the 2012 Summer Tour so far.

Fans packed the O2 early, braving stereotypical Irish weather - drizzling rain and blustery winds - for Jonathan Wilson, the North Carolina-born, California-based singer/songwriter who's opening the band's European shows.

The O2 was buzzing with anticipation following the end of Wilson's opening set, fans cramming up to the front rail in hopes of getting a glimpse of Tom and the band. The crew bounced around the stage, adjusting microphones here and tuning guitars there.

As the clock crept closer to 9 pm, the band began to gather in the hallway outside their dressing room, smiling and nodding to each other as they got ready to take the stage.

Tonight's moment was just before "Free Fallin', right after Tom introduced the band. As Mike Campbell walked to centerstage with his Rickenbacker strung around his neck, ready to launch into the song's iconic riff, Tom mentioned that he'd run into some Spanish fans that day as he walked around Dublin. Suddenly, a small group of fans - presumably the Spaniards he met earlier that day - on the back of floor started the "Ole, ole, ole, ole! Ole! Ole!" chant heard at European soccer games. Instantly, the entire arena picked up the chant, and the O2 was transformed into a soccer stadium.

"It was funny," Steve Ferrone, the band's resident Englishman, said after the show. "I'm not sure Tom and Mike knew what was going on, so I leaned down over my kit and yelled, 'It's a good thing! That means they like it!"

It was a special, special night, one not soon forgotten by the band, crew or the fans in attendance. After a tremendous "Mary Jane's Last Dance/American Girl" encore, Tom stepped to the mike and said, "Dublin, thank you so much for this special night. Let's not make it 20 years until the next time, ok?"

The Irish crowd roared in response, clapping and cheering as Tom and the guys waved goodnight and exited the stage. If these Heartbreaker fans have anything to say about, Tom and the band will be back very, very soon.

    SET LIST
    Listen to Her Heart
    You Wreck Me
    I Won't Back Down
    Here Comes My Girl
    Handle with Care
    Good Enough
    Oh Well

    King's Highway
    Free Fallin'
    It's Good To Be King
    Something Good Coming
    Learning to Fly
    Yer So Bad
    I Shoulda Known It
    Refugee
    Runnin' Down A Dream

    ENCORE:
