I am having some trouble with a Volvo S40 2007 1.6 diesel, the car is losing power and I have to go down through the gears to get up hills, the rev counter falls below 2000 and even on a straight it will cap at 1900 and 80km with foot to floor on accelerator. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the particle filter is blocked. Think the engine in the volvo is the same as the fords and Peugeots. It may need a top up of serene fluid or else get the filter changed/cleaned.

Already topped up fluid, I was told that following fluid top up, it would take some driving to recharge (in fact there was no fluid present), I have done 400km and it is progressively getting worse

Is the an engine management light on?

I had this problem on my S40 1.6d just before the DPF got completely blocked.

Bascially the DPF has become so blocked that the regeneration cycle will not kick in to try and clear it. So the car goes into limp home mode which means it will not rev over 2000 rpm to protect it from damage. Eventually the engine management light will come on and car will become undrivable.

So either the DPF regeneration cycle needs to be forced by a main dealer or a garage with the correct software. If that fails then there are two options, either get the DPF replaced or have it removed and have it deleted from the car's ECU by someone who knows what they are doing. A new DPF will cost you €1000+.

Thanks for replies, limp home mode sounds about right, no engine management light on yet but the car is certainly getting progressively worse.

At what mileage should the DPF be serviced and what would a service look like, the car was serviced at 100km.

If there is no light on or warning on the display then the car is not in limp mode. Try a new fuel filter if you don't have a history of it being changed recently. They often get neglected on these engines as they are awkward to change and quite expensive. If you are not familiar with changing fuel filters on diesel engines then get a pro to do it. If you do it wrong and the system gets airlocked you will find it almost impossible to bleed.

It could be anything from a cracked vacuum hose to a stuck open egr valve or as mentioned a blocking dpf (but this would normally bring on a warning message)
Get it hooked up to some good level diagnostic equipment and check for any fault codes logged....also get them to check the diff pressure across the dpf @idle..2k..3k...?
Also check the actual turbo pressure and compare it to the required turbo pressure from the ecu...?

Try cleaning out the EGR valve. Had power loss issues with my S40. Volvo told me nothing wrong, car drives great.

I changed the EGR and power back to normal.
May not be the case with your vehicle but removing and cleaning it is something you can do yourself without any fancy equipment required and will at least rule that out as an issue.

    Try cleaning the MAF.

I think having it properly diagnosed once would be better then trying lots of random things upon the off chance you might hit on something.

I'm having same problem with 1.6d volvo s40, engine management light is on, took car to dealership to run diagnostics and came back with DPF blocked. Is it still worth taking the car out on motorway to force regen?

Also found DPF cleaner online which says can be added to fuel tank and will clear this problem anybody any experience with this?

    Thanks

If it is down on power and showing as blocked then a DPF regeneration can only be forced via software. No trip on a motorway will force a DPF regeneration at that stage.

If a forced regeneration fails to clear it then you need to look at either having it taken out and cleaned, removed permanently or replaced with a new one. A new one will be the most expensive option.

Bazz is more than likely right in that the dpf is gone.

The fluid is supposed to be refilled at 80k and if its not done it can do in the dpf.

If it has run out of the regen fluid before you filled it back up it will never go into regen mode.
Theres a procedure done through the diagnostic equipment to force it to regen. But its main dealer only.

Bear in mind that if you go this route(in bold) then if its ever plugged into a main dealers diagnostic equipment for any reason at all then the software installed to "remove it" will be over written by the dealers software and you`ll have your light on again.
