I had a search but couldn't find a definite answer for this.

If I am the only person in my group that has a distance measuring device, can the other player(s) ask me to use it for them?

I know people can ask about distances on the course, and that the distance measuring device can be shared.

So can someone ask me to measure from their ball to a point on the course ?

yes, check the online rules of golf, it even has an FAQ on this exact topic.

Why not use your eyes and natural ability to work out the distance?

Golf is becoming too technical and all this slows up the game also.

I personally find it more enjoyable to work it out for myself and learn to judge distances naturally. Even if you do know its X distance you still have to have a perfect swing and hit the ball sweet to hit an exact distance.

do you hit your 7 iron 147m every time?
    just drives me crazy

this slows up the game also.

I'm don't know, I'm betting it takes me less time (about a second) to look at my device for distance as against looking for a marker and pacing things out. Dmds speed the game up.

Precisely, so no real advantage is gained no matter how you determine the distance.

IMHO, I don't see the ability to guesstimate distance as an intrinsic skill of golf.

Exactly, the skill is in being able to hit the ball a required distance.

If not, then why have any distance markers anywhere, fairways, tees etc?

agree with Greebo here...super quick process and in no way do they slow the game down when used correctly

concerning how many of the same question(ish) get recycled on here. We may run out of topics in 2012:)
