When I try to change the country settings to UK I get this message

The state and zip code you provided do not match

Do you know any valid State/Province/Region
    Zip/Postal codes.

I've tried London N17 OAP (which is Tottenham) vbut no joy.

    Any help appreciated

You've used an "O" in the postcode, it needs to be a zero "0". So instead of "N17 OAP" it should be "N17 0AP".

The first digit on the second part of a UK postcode is always a number.

There are only a few ways to use a UK kindle outside the UK. All of the below still require you to have it registered to a UK/ N. Irish address. This will not work on 3G kindles unless the 3G is off (kinda pointless getting a 3g kindle then).

1- to download the books to a PC and send to kindle via USB

2- to set up a uk VPN on your router and connect the kindle to that

3- you can make about 3-4 purchases in Ireland from an Irish IP, after that you'll have to connect it to a UK IP ( via VPN or a trip to the UK or Northern Ireland ).

    That's it :-)

If you're unhappy doing all that, don't blame Amazon, blame the paranoid and greedy publishers who dictate exactly where, when and for how much books are released. I think the publishers want regionalised releases with separate prices ... Kinda like dvd regions. Again nothing to do with Amazon.

Oh if you're trying to get a correct postcode for the uk, google a hotel or business address in the uk and use that ;-)

    What books have people bought?

Nothing has caught my eye so far and I've about 5 books to read atm I've not bought anything yet.

I've had a look as well and there's nothing I particularly want. There's a long way to go yet so hopefully I'll eventually spot something I like.

Changed my main address to a new one but it still says I can't order from the co.uk site?

My kindle is registered to Irish address and amazon.com. My husband works 4 days each week in UK. Can he get the free books from amazon.co.uk and email them to me and I then transfer them to my kindle via usb and if this is possible how would he do it. Would he just open an amazon.co.uk account, he doesnt have a kindle.

Are you downloading directly from the site to the Kindle? I think you have to download to your PC/Mac first then transfer to the Kindle. I could be wrong though.

I lasted about 2 hours before they stopped my account. I was downloading via usb, they must be on to this in a big way now.

There are a few sites on Facebook promoting the free books of the day - usually 40-60 each day

That's not quiet how it works :-)

Firstly, books bought for the kindle are locked to the account they're bought from. So in order to read the books you'd have to switch your account from .com to .co.uk, but again, doing so in Ireland would prevent purchases after 3-4 books.

Additionally, though the kindle will prevent purchases when it's outside it's registered region it won't prevent you from reading books you already have.

What you could do is change your address to somewhere in the UK and when he's in the UK he can purchase them as normal and they'll be sent to your kindle over wi-fi/3G, no need for him to download and then mail you.

Alternatively, many large companies in Ireland may be part of a larger corporate network so the machine on your desk could be part of a UK network. Therefore you can then again just change your address to the UK and use the .co.uk website.

I've done it this way for 3 books so far on the 12 Days of Christmas but some people have said this only works for a short time. However I can't see why it will stop if you're using a computer on a UK network, your address is set to the UK and IP address will tell Amazon you're physically in the UK so I think it should be fine.

I'm really glad I read this, I was thinking of getting a Kindle, but I'm not going to bother, it sounds like too much trouble!

This is only if you want to purchase from amazon.co.uk instead of amazon.com.
If you just purchase from amazon.com, its extremely straight forward.

And its worth pointing out that people are only having this hassle because despite having US-registered Kindles, they now want to avail of a special offer located in the UK, hence the jiggory-pokery. It would be a bit like Tesco UK Clubcard having triple the points, and you trying to change your Tesco Ireland clubcard account so you get the triple points too. Its theoretically doable, but not really intended practice.

I was just about to post what syklops said, I've only done so in order to avail of the 12 Days of Christmas offers on the UK site, otherwise I'm perfectly happy to use the default US site.

There's no hassle at all otherwise, in fact it couldn't be simpler.

Not really. If Tesco only gave clubcard users in Ireland points towards purchases in their American store, your analogy would work.

What I meant was, most people in Ireland their Kindle account defaults to being an American or amazon.com account, just like in Ireland their Tesco Clubcard defaults to being an Irish Tesco Clubcard. If they wanted to avail of a UK clubcard special offer they would have to change or get a UK Clubcard

Maybe the analogy is a bit laboured, but the point is there are two(or more) types of Amazon/Kindle accounts. Having one type does not automatically make you elligible for offers to all other accounts.

I would say if you were thinking of getting a Kindle, then get one. I only received mine yesterday and I'm really pleased with it. It is so easy to download books and they are there in a minute. As another poster said, its just to get the free books from the .co.uk site, and I don't like to see something free passing me by.

I spend so much time in the car waiting for my children to get out of school, or finish training, or get off the train, or collect my husband and I now plan to have my Kindle in my handbag so instead of giving out about them being the last kids out I wont mind.

Also want to thoroughly recommend the kindle. Got a Kindle Touch for Christmas and I absolutely love it. No problem buying books from the amazon.com site and they sync between my Kindle, iPad and iPhone so i can continue reading the same book on different devices with the minimum of fuss as it keeps track of what page you are on.
Don't know why I didn't get one sooner.
