disinfectant wipes on iPhone 4???

    Hello,

Does anybody know how I can safely disinfect an iPhone 4?

I won't go too much into the gross details, but I was out walking today and I was putting the iPhone in my inside jacket pocket while side-stepping a pile of "you-know-what" after seeing it at the last second. I missed the pocket and you can guess what happened next. (The entire area where I live is a disgrace because of the neglect of a few dog owners).

Anyway, there are no stores anywhere nearby that sell "approved and tested" disinfectant wipes that I've seen in Apple stockists.

The only thing I can get would be Milton or Dettol wipes or baby wipes (like used in changing nappies).

It is pretty disgusting, and I am freaking out. Would any of the above wipes be safe to use on my iPhone and cause no damage?

    Cheers

    Yes, they'd be fine.
Just turn phone off first and then wipe it down with kitchen paper first, then wet wipes. Use q-tips for the holes.
Afterwards wipe it dry and leave it turned off for an hour in the hot press to dry thoroughly.

    Thanks biko.;)

So Milton and Dettol wipes are okay. Are Domestos wipes the same?

I've used various wipes on mine several times no problem.
If they are too wet - wring them out until just slightly damp.

    Hi again biko.

I didn't know but at the same time I was posting here my sister phoned the Apple Store in Belfast and the guy on the phone said he "wouldn't recommend it" as it could cause cosmetic damage.

I just want to be sure, biko. Have you used Dettol wipes specifically? Those would most likely be the only ones I could get.

    Thanks for helping.

I haven't used Dettol wipes but I'm pretty certain they wouldn't do anything. Clean it with a damp cloth first then a wipe then go back over it with a damp cloth and then dry it. Be careful you don't wet the water sensors in the headphone port and dock.

I used alcohol swabs on mine and they did nothing bad. It's glass and metal it's not too sensitive.

I use Dettol wipes all the time and they work really well. No damage caused. Apple are hardly gonna approve anything other that the recommended stuff so you don't come back an say your phone has eczema or something. Anyway, as above they can be a little too wet so just watch how much moisture you're getting into nooks and crannies. Best of luck sounds like a stinker of a problem;-)

If you ring Apple they will never recommend anything that has the slightest chance of damaging the phone as if you mess it up you might sue them.
