Sizing on overshoes

Happy Xmas - hope Santa was good to ye all :)

I have a 44 sized road shoe and bought these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=45051 in a 43/44 size.
I noticed a comment on the CRC website from a previous buyer who also bought a 43/44 overshoe but they were too big so he changed to a smaller size.
That got me thinking... how tight should overshoes be to ensure they keep the wind/rain out? Should they be a easy fit e.g. like pulling on socks or a tighter fit so that you have to stretch them a bit to go over the shoes?
    Mine are the former.

I bought Endura size 45/46 Overshoes from CRC three weeks ago for my shoes which are actually 46 and they're a bit too big . I'd go a size smaller if buying again . The plus is I can put a pair of oversocks underneath the overshoes so my feet have been pretty toastie:).

I have bought about 5 different pairs over the last 3 years and I think sizing is very hit and miss. The advantage with CRC is they have a no quibble replacement policy and overshoes are not expensive to post.
Of the ones that I have worn out, the zips or heels on the tight fitting ones tended to fail when putting them on/off and the loose ones tend to cover part of the cleat making it difficult to clip in. My BBB heavy duty ones are two sizes up on my North Wave shoes and I have this problem.
The worst case scenario I have come across was failing to fit a pair of 45 PRO aero overshoes on 43 Shimano shoes.

I wrote that review. Had to go a size down as they were too loose. The lightweight specialized ones I had were size M so I figured I'd go size for size with the BBBs. Not sure what other brands are like. As someone mentioned earlier CRC are great for returns so long as no damage is done.
