I thought it would be good to broaden my movie horizons :) any one have good films to watch new or old? I think the recent movie 50/50 was absolutely amazing one of those movies that really makes you think about life in general, but be ready with a box full or tissues I balled my eyes out and I barely ever cry at movies. It's really touching cause I think everyone has been effected by cancer at some stage in their lives and this film really brings it to life 10/10 from me pardon the pun :P

    Hi,

    I agree about 50/50...great film.

If you're looking to broaden your horizons, then I would suggest the following films:

    Taxi Driver
    The Godfather 1 and 2
    A Clockwork Orange
    Dog Day Afternoon
    Scarface
Funny Games (the original Austrian one)
    The Lives of Others

...there are loads and loads of brilliant films, but I'd suggest you check out the above.

I've sent you a PM link to where you can watch them.

I'd second The Lives of Others, which is a moving film.

You might also like something like The Squid and the Whale, which is about the effect of a divorce on a teenager and his kid brother, or The Sea Inside, which is about a disabled man fighting for the right to kill himself (it's not as grim as it sounds).

A more cheerful one is Big Fish, which is about a man reevaluating his relationship with his dying father while telling his father's fantastical stories to his wife. (Father-son relationships are a very popular theme in film, but that's an unusual one.) Waitress is the story of a woman trapped in an abusive marriage who has an affair with her doctor. It's also colourful and witty.

I'm going to recommend The Blues Brothers. It might not be too deep but it's some of the best fun you'll ever see. :)

they don't all have to be depressing :P. Another great film is the prestige or even any Christopher Nolan movie :) thanks everyone for the suggestions much appreciated.

Movies that broaden the horizons - or really leave you thinking - are my absolute favourite. Here are some of my favourites, all of which are unique and will surprise, confuse, entertain or otherwise blow your mind:

    - Rushmore, Wes Anderson's quirky, ridiculous, dark, cynical, hopeful masterpiece. (See Also: The Royal Tenenbaums)

    - Sunset Boulevard - a little dose of humour to lighten the mood, this demented movie always entertains.

    - Dogville - Lars von Trier's masterpiece, even if I'm the only person who believes it :)

    - Happiness - Todd Solondz movie remains one of the most uncomfortable, yet simultaneously uplifting viewing experiences available today.

    - The Fountain, Aronofsky's movie is one of the most mind-blowing pieces of cinema I've ever seen. Not for the faint of heart, this is not an easy movie but it is guaranteed to leave you thinking. The Fountain borders on being a dissertation on the meaning of life and love.

give us a more defined list of what you currently enjoy beyond chick flicks ;)

American History X and amazing film Ed Norton and Ed Furlong put in two great performances.

but as the skerries above said help narrow down the field a lil bit.

thanks i'll defiantly have a look at them :)

I actually don't really watch "chick flicks" (I'm assuming your talking about 50/50 which i don't believe is a chick flick as i think it would even make Paul O'Connell cry :p)
I tend to watch a lot of Sci Fi/fantasy: Lord Of the Rings, Star Wars, Back to the Future, Blade Runner,V for Vendetta,Harry Potter Star Trek etc.
I also love the blood and ice cream trilogy (Shaun of the dead, hot fuzz).
Action/thriller movies :Shutter Island, Bourne trilogy, Catch me if you can,
,and War/History films: saving private Ryan, jarhead and the TV series band of brothers
recent movies I've really liked are Attack the Block,Senna,Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy,The Guard
I always love there to be a bit of comedy in the movie as well.
any suggestions of movies you think I will like?

    Ok here comes a few,

Reign Over Me: A film in which Adam Sandler plays a serious role  but is suprisingly good in it, the film is a bout a man dealing with the fallout on his life after 9/11.

Marley and Me: A great film.

The Wind That Shakes The Barley: An Irish film taking a look at the civil war in Ireland.

Blow the true story of a man who started of selling weed , and moved onto sellin cocaine in America. A great story.

Natural Born Killers: Its a bit different starring Woody Harrelson, Juiliette Lewis, Robert Downey about serial killers

True Romance: A epic gangster film written by Tarantino directed byTony Scott, starring Christian Slater.

Super Troopers: For comedy you cant go much wrong with this.

If you dont mind subtitles chect out The Host: A great sci fi film made in south Korea with some very good special effect and really likable Characters.

Also Flame and Citron: Another True story this time based on World War 2.

Hope some of those films are of help, I know list threads arent allowed in here, so trying to give a lil description while also not giving away to much for the op:o.

I actually never heard it called that, I always know them as the Cornetto trilogy and Paul doesn't count as they didn't direct it and the third film has to be released yet

ya it's got 2 names blood and ice cream trilogy (because they all feature blood and ice cream) , or the three flavors cornetto trilogy and yes I made a mistake about Paul cause the trilogy is films writen by Simon Pegg and Edgar wright staring frost and Pegg and directed by Edgar :p

Woody Allen's 70s movies are hard to beat especially Annie Hall, probably the funniest film I ever seen, also try some of the classics like Some Like It Hot, Casablanca and The Big Sleep (Bogart version). Recent German cinema has been fantastic too, The Lives of Other, Downfall, The Baadar Meinhoff Complex, The White Ribbon are among the best things I've seen in the cinema in the last 5 years or so. For sci fi you have to check out Solaris, the Tarkovksy original version from 1972 its absolutely sublime.

Don't watch Police Academy 1 to 7 in one go though.

    I watched
Reign over me: It's a good movie about Friendship, grief and mental health problems. Adam Sandler wouldn't be my fist choice for a serious roll (even though I do really like him as an actor) because I always see him as Mr.deeds :) but he did do a very good job and I was pleasantly surprised. The film, I thought, was kinda dragged out at the start but the second half was very though provoking and meaningful. all in all I would give it a 8/10

the next movie I watched was
Waitress: I thought it was going to be a serious film as it's about a waitress who has an abusive husband and starts to have an affair with her doctor. To be honest I didn't think it was great I thought the humour was quite dry and for an hour and fifty minutes not much happenes. I'll give it a 4/10 mainly for the main character
I'm gonna watch some more movies and I'll keep you posted :)

Gald to hear you liked Reign Over Me, it terribly under rated film i feel it didnt gather any attention at the the time when people saw Adam Sandler in a serious role I myself only kind of stumbled upon it.

But keep us up to date as you watch them and if your looking for more ideas feel free to ask.

    I watched
Flame and Citron: I thought it was amazing the plot, the twists, the characters, the acting, the cinematography, all amazing. I defiantly think the fact that's it's in Danish was really effective it wouldn't be half the movie it is if it was in English. I'm going to give it 9/10

Delighted you liked that one, its one film I came across on imdb and went out and bought hoping for the best, and was delighted with it so many twist and turns with grreat characters that you really care for by the end of it, another one in similar vein but Dutch and bit more well known is Black Book also take a look at Max Manus a Norwegian film. For me neither are as good as Flame and Citron but both brilliant in there own right.
