AFAIK if you sign up to it they have a pretty good support structure - organised spins, training tips etc.

I'd love to do it, but I personally hate those fund-raising style gigs. It's a pity there isn't a fee option where you pay a reasonable amount yourself to just do the event, cos it sounds like a good one.

    TDM requirements.

    Simple.
You need to sign up very quickly as places are at a premium.
Attend some of the early season training sessions to show the organisers that you can cycle safely in a group.
If possible attend the twice weekly Cork based mid week training spins from April.
By April you should be on the bike at least 3 times a week. You would want to be doing a min of 200km/week by June.
Attend as many of the sportifs with TDM as possible and cycle with the gang.
Commit to raising min of €1k sponsorship.

The comment from the other poster about a fee bases option is a bit silly given that TDM is a charitable event. Nothing stopping you paying the money yourself though.

Hope that helps. Best of luck.

The An Post Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford has suggested training plans for similar distances:

Well lads, anyone going for the 'Calibration' spin in Clonmel this weekend. I presume 'Calibration' means 'eye-opener', i.e. you will be brought down to earth and left under no illusion as to how unfit you have become as you have 'wintered' over the last few months.

Had a look at Strava and 'Seskin Hill' doesn't look too bad, 8.8% gradient compared to a max of 18.6% for Temple Hill (which was on the training route last year).

The Strava classes the route as 'Medium Difficulty' so hopefully we'll be o.k. I don't mind grinding out the hills, I just hate blowing a gasket and having to walk to the top.

Seskin is tough. The average doesnt tell the whole truth as there are 2 ramps on it. After the hair-pin it (almost) levels out. Take it easy here because the last ramp is tough.

The RAS had a few stage finishes there - look it up on YouTube.

    +1.

Did it last year as part of the sean kelly tour of waterford. After the hairpin it hits 20% and beyond for a short while.

Yeah, numbers wise, Seskin Hill (avg 8.8%) looks easier than Temple Hill (avg 15%), but Seskin is twice as long, and in terms of completing them, they're both tough fcekers ;)

As far as I know Seskin features on Day2 of the calibration weekend, the shorter by far of the two spins based on what I've heard - it's the 'recovery' day after Day1's estimated 140km main event ride, and I can't see any records being broken or PRs being set this time of the year on Seskin. Factor in the night before too. More than half the expected participants are doing only Sat's event as far as I know too.

Last year the final 50km of were a pure hammer (it was a one-day spin). I would expect the same this time round. Brings it on :)

The Tour de Munster organisers posted this yesterday on you tube. A short summary of this years event. Terrific cause and well worth a watch. :D

Don't just be tempted michael, do it. I have 2 under my belt and will be there again next year. It's a great event for but it's all about the cause and the charity and the DSI Munster branches have put the €800k+ over the last 3 years raised to great use in each of the 6 counties.

Just make sure that you let this fella know your plans in advance. He'll appreciate it.

There's been very good interest, brisk signing up with a lot of new names apparently. Well worth it lads. Stopping traffic between Dingle and Milltown was a highlight.. ;)

The most I've ever cycled is 50k and barely cycled at all last year but I'm giving it serious consideration. Is it possible to get fit enough in less that 8 months?

Yes! Official training starts in April and if you stick to the program you'll be fit in plenty of time. It can be done.

We stopped in a petrol station in Tarbet on Day 2 (when the temps nearly reached 30 degrees). Next thing a bus pulled in with a bunch of females on a Hen Party outing. Sean kelly was in his element !!!!!!!!. No better man.

The TdeM Mid Winter Prologue takes place on the 23rd and 24th Feb out of Clonmel. Day one will be c.130km and day two will be c.70.

Day one is Clonmel-Fethard-Killenaule-The Commons-The Crag Hill (ouch)-Tullaroan-Kilkenny City (lunch which is paid for)-Callan-Carrick on Suir-Clonmel

For anyone who just want to do 100km you can forgo the option to go to Carrick and cycle straight on into Clonmel.

The DSI branches of Tipp/KK and WD are using the event to bucket shake in Clonmel, Carrick and Kilkenny. Cyclists taking part can also give towards these DSI branches when registering. The event will leave the Clonmel Park Hotel at 10am sharpish. All cyclists who have* 100km in them are invited and most welcome to participate. As mentioned before, the last 50km or from about Ninemilehouse it all hots up for those who want to stretch the legs and go hard all the way down to Carrick and then onto Clonmel but remember that there will be bucket shakers in Carrick so no turning off at Keoghs bakery!!!

*note I say have and not think they have......

Day two will be taking in Seskin Hill and then onto Portlaw and back to Clonmel. Good to shake off any pints from the night before :)
