Today my laptop seemed to work fine, no problems, and suddenly the screen went blank. So I turned the laptop on and off again and it made no difference, in fact, I think this happened this morning but fixed itself and worked no bother. The lights and sounds work and I get to the computer fine if I connect another LCD to the laptop. Nothing is wrong with it that way. I have tried pressing FN + the Sun ^ up button several times and it makes no difference.

I have a feeling that this is a related problem with the LCD lamp itself and mainly there is a need for a replacement. Would you agree with me on that statement? If I'm right by this, could someone post some links where I can find an affordable LCD? Does this have to be mainly for Dell or can it be an ordinary LCD screen for a 18 inch laptop?

Thanks in advance for yer help! Happy Christmas!

There is no LCD lamp as such, if the screen is dull it may be the backlight, if not its just the screen. Either way the solution is to replace the screen as a backlight is very difficult to change, you would have to dismantle the screen and its internals. Any ordinary screen won't work, and most Dell screens won't work, you have to get one speific to your model. Every model has different connections for the screen, although some will work in similar laptops, usually the seller would know. If you're looking for a cheep replacement your first port of call should be eBay.

I'm not sure yet if the invertor would be the problem however... It could be the backlight..

Yes, the screen is fine itself and it is very dull, I had a feeling that the backlight was the problem. I will open it up first and check for a loose connection to the inverter and the screen before I order a new screen altogether. I would be happy to open up the laptop to change the inverter instead of buying a new screen, would the backlight be gone or would it be more likely that the inverter is the problem?

    Thanks for ye'r help.
