RTE are constantly screwing up aspect ratios but it may your TV at fault. A lot of modern TVs have a function where the image automatically fills the screen often cutting off information all around.

There was a time when both BBCand RTE showed the same episode of Medium at exactly the same time on a Tuesday. On BBC the shows aspect ratio was kept but on RTE they cut off a good third of the screen meaning that thr show was produced by Kelsey Gram and starred Patrica Arq

I have a question I've always wondered about this episode: You know the part where the priests are lost in the lingerie section of the store? Are there references there to any particular movie? I know the Sliders part of course. It looks like it would be a good movie.

I don't know about Father Ted, but I found it difficult to sit through Quantum of Solace with the image all cropped at the sides. That, and the movie was ****e.

This aspect ratio problem has been going on for years, what the hell is the cause of it????

Sky Atlantic HD has big stupid black borders on the left/right sides that's not on the standard def aswell, it's a problem on lots of channels.

Also, Happy Xmas Folks!! We just need abit of snow. Just abit.

That's because Sky Atlantic show a lot of shows in their original aspect ratio. Most TV has traditionally been in 4:3

    UPC, Sky or Terrestrial ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,200 ✭✭✭Mindkiller

If it's Boardwalk Empire or Game of Thrones or whatever then yes, the black borders at the side shouldn't be there. But Sky Atlantic show lots of 4:3 stuff as well IIRC. Like Six Feet Under.

So it's all to do with the date the program and/or film your're watching was made??

And your TV settings - to a lesser extent - your providers settings

    RTE widescreen
Viewers subscribing to Digital Platforms that carry RTÉ transmissions will experience full wide screen transmission when viewing 16:9 widescreen transmissions. When a programme is being transmitted in 4:3, such as archive programmes that were originally made in 4:3, the widescreen receiver will automatically switch to 4:3 and the viewer will experience small black curtains to the left and right hand sides of the screen. Viewers with a widescreen television on digital platform (NTL Digital and Sky Digital receivers) can now receive 'true widescreen' picture. However, you may need to manually adjust your set box if the picture is distorted.

RTE didn't fcuk it up, was perfect on 2 different tellies here.

There have been many aspect ratios over the years for movies and for tv. The very first video actually had a circular picture, which is the most "natural" picture obtained from an optical lens. Later they started cutting it to a square or rectangular shape. Very old movies were in about 4:3, even for example Gone With The Wind. Only later did they come up with the idea of making it widescreen because we have a significantly larger horizontal field of view than vertical one. However tv was already in production/out by this stage and it remained at 4:3.

The widest movie format used was probably Cinemascope, Once Upon a Time in the West is a famous movie that has a very large aspect ratio. These shapes were treating our horizontal field of view as being larger than it is and were arguably done just as a gimmick. Most movies have an aspect ratio a little wider than 16:9 (widescreen).

The video should always be shown at the aspect ratio it's supposed to be shown at. Otherwise you'll have parts cut off or parts of it stretched. I can understand cropping a movie that is quite close to 16:9 to 16:9, nothing else.

But what RTE did is far worse than cropping. They both stretched it AND put black bars into it. There is no justification for airing a national programme like that. I wouldn't put up a youtube video with it like that, never mind sending it out on national tv. Just do whatever it takes to make it work, it can't be that difficult surely, you were able to do it before.

    fine on sky here

Nope, I actually messed around because the subtitles weren't working for it and it was fine through Sky, Analogue and DTT.

The problem is on your end this time.

Just to be clear, on an old LCD 16:9 telly from an analogue signal, fine. Small bit of black all around but it's always like that because the TV is retarded, still had 16:9 aspect ratio and wasn't stretched and didn't seem to have anything missing. On the other telly new-ish full HD LCD TV with both freeview and Saorview, fullscreen through Sky, Analogue and DTT, not stretched and nothing obviously missing. I'd assume I'd notice anything missing on my 15th viewing.

Well it must have been stretched at 14:9. This is what's used by RTE terrestrial as a compromise between widescreen and 4:3. However appears stretched on a Sky box that doesn't have the capability to show 14:9. Thinking back, I don't think it was the full 16:9 stretching but 14:9. Sometimes it's hard to tell this from normal aspect ratio, but other times it looks really wrong.

It's very rare that you see a channel broadcasting in that format, and only cheap channels: never serious ones. I assume that Sky forbids it in their requirements for broadcasting. My tv is an old CRT one so it certainly isn't my fault. The fault can lie only with RTE.

For me on Sky 3e is the only channel that comes up as 14:9. I only know that because it stretches and unstretches before/after breaks. :pac: It did on the 4:3 telly anyway, seems ok since we got the widescreens in.

Mess around with your settings, I hate RTE more than the vast majority of people but the problem ain't on their end for once. Like I said, it looked exactly the same on Sky, RTE "HD" and analogue. Funny enough on our telly the British channels have (very small) black bars on analogue.

I think this thread illustrates that people are starting to think there was no telly before 16:9 started to become the default ratio. While the rest don't know how adjust settings when they need to!.

Anyone else remember "Targat SG-1" on Sky One a few years ago, courtesy of NTL?

Look at it, it's on now and stretched in 16:9. Sometimes some parts of it don't look stretched. When it's stretched vertically it causes a ludicrous effect, horizontally it's not as obviously but in a lot of scenes it's very clear also. This is how it's meant to look:
