Home cinema system or speakers?

Hi, Im hoping someone can help. When it comes to this sort of thing Im clueless so sorry if Im asking a thick question. We recently bought a mmedia player and have copied our music onto it in the hopes of getting rid of the stereo and cd's to make some space. The thing is the sound out of the tv could be better for the music. If we got a home cinema system can the mm player be hooked up to that or do we just get speakers for the tv?
    Any advise would appreciated, thanks;)

There are a number of possible solutions. The most common is for a surround sound home theatre system called 5.1 that involves an AV amplifier connected to the TV and with 5 or more speakers connected to it.

If you got one, a media player could be hooked up to it with the sound coming from the speakers. A lot depends on what inputs and outputs your TV has.

I have just a stereo 2 channel system hooked to my TV, because I think 2 good speakers are better than 5-7 mediocre ones and the seating arrangement with a sofa against a wall, doesn't allow for "rear" speakers.
