Dublin Bus 747 Airlink Q's

    Hiya,

I was thinking about taking the 747 tomorrow (5AM) in O'Connell Street to the airport, but I was wondering if it being the 24th affected the timetable in any way.

Also, where exactly in O'Connell Street does the 747 stop? It's a pretty long street and it would be silly to miss the bus by a few minutes just because I can't find the stop. Is it close to O'Connell Bridge or more towards the junction with Parnell?

And finally, it's 6€. Does it have to be exact or do these fellas give change? And if not, where can I buy a ticket for the 747 at this time/5AM tomorrow morning?

I originally booked a taxi (@ Checkers Cabs next to Tesco), but that's gonna be 20€ or something. But I'll have to cancel that I guess, hopefully they're still reachable at this hour otherwise there's a taxi driver gonna be pretty pissed tomorrow morning :)

It uses stop 4724 - outside McDonalds just past the spire. See the "View on Map" link on the 747 timetable page.

    AFAIK, its exact change only.

The 747 is one of the few routes that accepts notes, however, at 5am it would be useful to have the correct fare.

There are stops at College Green (Costa Coffee) and O'Connell Street (Dublin Bus Office, opposite the Savoy Cinema).

Alright, thanks for the info guys!

Do you have any idea if I can buy a ticket for the 747 at every shop that sells normal bus tickets?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,580 ✭✭✭✭Victor

No, there is no special pre-paid ticket only for Airlink. Your best bet would be a multi-day ticket from a ticket agent: http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Fares--Tickets/Ticket-Agents/

    http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Fares--Tickets/Tickets/2-Journey-Daily-Weekly/

    1 day = €6.20
    3 day = €13.50
    5 day = €22.00
    30 day = €110.00

The days do not need to be consecutive.

I'll post a question related to 747 bus route to Dublin Airport here becasuse is complementary to the one asked by the original poster. Will fly from Dublin Airport Terminal 1 in a flight scheduled for departure at 06.50 on Saturday. Low cost company and no need to check luggage in, web check in, so can proceed directly to the boarding gate.

That said, what time do I have to get into the 747 bus at O'Connell street to be at the boarding gate with enough time not to be worried about being denied boarding. I can understand that at that time of the day trip times for 747 have to be quite shorter, but I don't know how long does it takes the bus to arrive to O'Connell from Heuston, and then to Terminal 1, so to be at the stop at a certain time of the day (night).

Any first hand information about that, or I will have to wake up early next Saturday to check first hand at what time the 747 arrives to O'Connell, and plan accordingly?

    Thank you.

The aircoach arrived first in O'Connell Street so that's the one I took. Was 7€ for a single and took us to Terminal 1 in 20 minutes.
Walked in a relaxed tempo to the boarding gate which took me another 20 minutes.

So if your plane leaves at 6.50, take the bus at Heuston Station around 5.20.

I'm thinking of taking the 747 from Heuston soon. On Friday Feb 10th I will be coming to Dublin on a train from Cork arriving at 19:30.

I then have a flight to catch at 21:45, just wondering how long the 747 takes to get from Heuston to the Airport?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,580 ✭✭✭✭Victor

It is scheduled to take an hour. However, unless there is a problem, it is likely to do it in 45 minutes or less.

Be sure to book your train as far in advance as possible - 28 days - to get the best price.

Check your ticket / airline website exactly what time you need to be at the airport at.

Yup. Way ahead of you on the train price :)

Will be booking next week when it is possible due to the 28 day limit.

Flying with ryanair so will be checked in already and will just need to go through security.

Im thinking if im at the airport by 20:30 or 20:45 I have enough time.

    Thanks for the advice. :)

You ought to - there is a 747 at 1945 which should get you to the airport for between 2030 and 2045.

Fyi you don't need exact change.

The drivers will give you change.

Drivers won't have change at all times. Try to have change, pre-paid tickets or buy together.

Does anyone know what times the 747 leaves Busaras specifically? All the info I see applies to Houston only :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,287 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

It does not have specific departure times from Busaras, only from Heuston.

However, you can generally allow 20-30 minutes for it to get there after it has left Heuston depending on the time of day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,580 ✭✭✭✭Victor

From 0500 to 2030 it is every 15 minutes (every 20 minutes after that), but the exact time from Heuston to Busáras will vary depending on traffic and how busy the service is.

Keep an eye on this page: http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/RTPI/Sources-of-Real-Time-Information/?searchtype=view&searchquery=4717 and it will give you a real time estimate of departure times.

    Hi all,

apologies for hijacking this thread, but could i get approximately how long would it take for the bus to get to O'Connell Street from the Airport assuming the bus left at 11am on a weekday?

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 453 ✭✭pclive

    prob 25-30 min at most

Assuming nothing out of the ordinary was going on traffic-wise, you would be comfortably in O'Connell Street by about 1140ish.

However, be warned, traffic delays can and do happen - I was on an Airlink that got delayed for 10 minutes due to a thoughtlessly parked car blocking the traffic-calming section of Cathal Brugha Street.

I'm getting very confused on the Dublin Bus site. I've heard the airlink is cheaper than the aircoach. They both leave from same stop at o2 but I can't find prices/times leaving o2 to Airport?!

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 11,744 Mod ✭✭✭✭devnull

Airlink is cheaper by a euro and is a little more often - get airlink until this time and save yourself a quid. Buses every 15 minutes until late evening.

From 5th March Aircoach and Airlink will be the same price but Airlink will be more often, so get whatever bus comes first. Both services offer a return fare that will save money if doing a round trip.

The New Aircoach Greystones timetable is up:
    http://www.aircoach.ie/media/Greystones%208PP%20DL%20LR.PDF

It suggests that there will be a bus at xx:35 and xx:00 past the hour to the O2 and on xx:00 and xx:30 past the hour from the airport to the O2.

The DB one will be more often, but unfortunately there are not any intermediate times and I haven't been on the route since they changed the route a good few months back but I'm sure someone on here can post it.

Other things to watch out for. Return on 747 is 10 on Aircoach it's 11. Although kids prices are 50c cheaper for a single on Aircoach than on Airlink.

I haven't used the Airlink bus since 2009 as I normally fly from Cork and connect in Heathrow, however I am flying Emirates from Dublin this month (as APD have made UK flights too exensive) and I got a nice €12 train ticket from Killarney with Irish Rail so will be taking the train to Heuston and the Bus to the Airport.

Is it still €6.00? and do I still pay the driver and get my ticket on the Bus? I see a return is €10. how long is it valid for as I will be in Asia for a month before flying back to Dublin?

    Yes.
and do I still pay the driver and get my ticket on the Bus?
Yes, although I think there are ticket machines and the CIÉ desk at the airport. If possible, pay in coin, although this is one of the few routes that accepts notes.

    Yes.

    I'm not sure.

Thanks for the info Victor, I'll try get the €10 return if possible, I'll update the thread again but it is the end of March I am flying so another bit to go yet.

The 6 Euro return is not widely advertised but it can be purchased no problem last time I got on the bus about 6 months ago from Connolly.

    €6 return?

Note that it operates from Busáras, not Connolly.

I meant 10 euro - scrambled brain and yes from Busaras, but you know what I mean!

Anyone know the exact location of "Stop 8 - Talbot Street, Central Bus Station
& Connolly Rail Station" as described on the 747 Airlink PDF: http://dublinbus.ie/PageFiles/110/Airlink%20Brochure.pdf ?

The rest of the Dublin Bus site (http://dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/7471/) implies that the 747 runs non-top from North Wall Quay at Jury's Inn to Cathal Brugha St but clearly this is not the case. I took it a few months ago and I recall the "Connolly" stop was under a railway bridge but I can't remember if it was that at Talbot St (stop 620) or somewhere else...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,580 ✭✭✭✭Victor

The web page appears to be wrong. I can only imagine it is stop 620. It is indeed at a railway bridge and would be just about the only practical stop to use between North Wall Quay and Cathal Brugha Street.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,287 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

Stop 8 inbound is the first stop on Talbot Street, stop 620 which is at the railway bridge.

There is another stop near the Connolly Car Park (stop 7) on Commons Street at the junction with Sheriff Street.

Thanks guys! That makes sense, I recall the 747 stopping somewhere around the back of Connolly which looked pretty bleak, so that must be Stop 7.

Would the 6:15 departure from Heuston (747 bus) get me to the airport at around 7? I have to catch a flight leaving at 7:40 in a few days time (it's a weekday morning) - no luggage to check in.

I wouldn't risk that. Any delay at all - en route or at the airport (and 7am is peak travel time) means you've missed your flight. Also, take into account your carrier and their position In the airport - at the very end of terminal one or conveniently near the front of terminal two with very little competing traffic trying to get though security? You'd be much better off getting out there for 630 and having a less stressful time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,580 ✭✭✭✭Victor

What is your last check-in time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,287 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

For an 0740 flight I'd aim to be at the airport for 0630 or so

I'd aim for the 0545 or 0600 departures.

I need to be at the gate at around 7:20. I might need to take a taxi then, will be difficult to get to Heuston before 6:15.

    Thanks for the replies!

Yes, it would have you there in loads of time. I caught the 6:30 departure at the IFSC the other day (it arrived there about 6:43) and was at the airport at 7:05. As long as you know where your gate is, you shouldn't have any problems.

Just for future reference in case it helps someone - I took the 6:15am 747 bus a few weeks ago. Arrived airport at 6:53, and I was at the gate at 7:05. Did not leave much room for error, but at least I didn't have to pay €30+ for a taxi.
