Yeah, it was a really great year for films. I'm trying to put together my top 10 list at the moment and there's no way I can limit it to just 10 films.

It was a fantastic film and considering the numerous films which only played in Dublin it means that I have a great selection of films to look forward to over the coming weeks. Have A Separation, Kill List, Tree of Life and a few others on their way to me as I type. Hoping for a nice haul in the post tomorrow.

Anyone who thinks that the past year was a bad year is obviously misguided and just can't be bothered to put the tiniest bit of effort into looking past the local multiplex offerings.

In any case: get nominating if you haven't already!

And thanks to everyone who has nominated so far! Very diverse selection of nominations this year :)

Big thanks to Mr.E for putting the survey together.

    Thanks for putting this together.:)

Just wondering why there are only 3 choices in the best actress category when there are up to 7 in others? I know Kirsten Dunst (among others) got a few mentions in the nominations so I was expecting to see her there.

We counted on the general rule that five nominations was ideal, with leeway of two either way depending on the amount of nominations.

Best Actress had a large number of two vote nominations - Dunst, Olivia Colman, Kirsten Wigg, Viola Davis, Yun Jeong-hie - so we settled on three (who had a much larger amount of nominations) rather than eight!

Few surprises though - we were surprised Drive didn't make the cut in the Best American Indie / Arthouse category particularly, given its popularity elsewhere.

Thanks for your answer. I think Dunst got 3 nominations though but I suppose having less choice makes my decision slightly easier!:) Such a great year for actressing.

Actually, you're correct - that was a miscount on our end!

I'll check see if we can change that without screwing up the voting.

Kirsten Dunst has been added to the best actress category. Cheers SVG :)

Sorry list of Irish films there :/ Knuckle was probably the best output this year from here.

I thought Drive would have recieved much more praise during 'award season'.

    No discussion? :)

I don't think there were any huge surprises, although the fact that The Guard was up for most disappointing and best Irish film isn't a ringing endorsement for the last year of Irish cinema...

I voted for it in best irish film because it was literally the only new one i had seen this year i ! Although I didn't think it was deserving of a worst film nomination either.

Would have liked to see Attack the Block win something. Watched it a few times now and it just gets better.

    Drive the big winner

I didn't even vote in the Irish film category. I haven't seen the other film and The Guard truly was one of the worst films I saw this year.

And yeah, Drive did very well. I suspect it would have won Best American Indie/Arthouse as well, but not enough people nominated it.

The Hangover 2 getting Most Disappointing and Most Overrated. Ouch! That's like losing your legs then getting a flat on your wheelchair.

Not a lot i particularly disagree with here. Good job.

I expected Bridemaids to take these, I guess everyone who slated it really did enjoy it and were lying :p

Senna wins emphatic winning margin for an award for best documentary

I didn't vote in the awards, but very much liking the results... especially the recognition for Christian Bale in The Fighter!

13 Assassins was a hoot. Warrior was definitely the film that suprised me most too as I thought it was going to be woeful!

One of the things that struck me when I was doing my choices was that it was a year with a lot of good movies - but for me, no great movies. I saw a few particularly indy flicks that struck me quite a lot but I don't think any of them were '11 releases (except possibly Noé's Enter the Void, which was more striking than great...and Melancholia was great but I just love LVT so I'm probably alone on that one).

Am I way off base - do people really think that Drive is really all that good? Is it perhaps telling that a movie which won all the key technical awards (Director, Screenplay, Cinematography and Score!) didn't win any of the best film awards?

I 'm guessing that a few people didn't believe it fit into the 'best film' nomination categories . I never even considered it for the "Indie/Arthouse movie" award as it has two A listers in the leading roles . Wasn't sure whether Drive was an American or Non American movie?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,693 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

As I said above, Drive probably would have won Best American Indie/Arthouse, but it didn't get nominated. There's not enough participation in the nomination stage, at least for certain categories. The longlists this year were an attempt to improve this, but I'm not sure it made a huge difference. Submitting nominations takes more effort than voting.

And Drive definitely belongs in the American Indie/Arthouse category. All its financing came from the US and was independent. However, that category was really designed as a place for less mainstream American films, like a lot of prestige films that get released around Oscar time, which tend to be labeled as "independent" regardless of whether they really are not. The problem with Drive, I suspect, is that it appealed mostly to people who wouldn't normally characterise themselves as fans of "indie/arthouse" films.

Oh and 13 Assassins is great and all, but I doubt most of the people who voted for it have seen A Separation, which was far more deserving of Best Foreign Language Film.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,759 ✭✭✭sxt

Agreed, that many people may not have seen all the nominated movies, but I think it will encourage people to see them which is a good thing!

A Separation was a surprisingly close second in the foreign film cat though, which is nice. And while I'm not sure 13 Assassins was the best foreign film of the year - probably not even the best Japanese film when you consider things like Confessions, Eva 2.22 or Cold Fish - it still was a tremendous action film, so far from disappointed in that regard :)

I think Drive was a worthy winner in a few categories (soundtrack especially) but Tree of Life was definitely 'worthier' in the cinematography and direction awards.

Surprised at 50/50s popularity. It's on the list to watch, but kinda came out of nowhere in these awards.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved Confessions. That movie blew me away, the dichotomy of the amazing aesthetics and the horrible storyline was just amazing. Seeing it on the big screen really added something.
