It could be a lot of things. Could you tell us what you were doing before this happened? Was the PC working properly before? Did you open the PC up? You could connect the hard drive of that PC to another PC. It seems to be the easiest way to get your files. Fixing that PC could take a while depending on the problem

first thing i'check is the graphics card. not easy to troubleshoot without a spare. is it a add in graphics card you have or built on the motherboard? if its an add on there may be a spare one on tbe motherboard. try removing the addon and plugging the monitor into that.

you havent changed the screen resilution recently have you?

Had the pc on earlier today and it was working fine. Think I was hoping someone would say "press buttona abc and restart" and everything would be grand lol

Tbh I am lost with regards to the techy stuff mentioned already and wouldnt know where to start but thanks, just dont want to have to bring it to be looked at and end up with a bill I cant afford .

Check the connection at the back of the monitor.

Where are you based? If you're not in a mad rush to fix the computer, I think I'm willing to help. I'm always interested in this stuff :). But yeah you're right, if you don't know much about tech stuff, it's going to be a bit of a bite for you. I'm sure a lot of people here like myself will be willing to help you out if you do decide to put your head into your computer and fix it up :)

Op, what type of connection are you using between the computer and the monitor?
I had a similar problem occasionally on booting up a windows xp machine which had a dvi port on the graphics card but was using a dvi to VGA adapter and then a VGA cable to the VGA port on the monitor.
The computer would always boot normally (I could vnc to it across the network) but as in your case, the monitor would show "no signal" and go to sleep.
Switching to a dvi cable resolved it for me, so I either had a bad VGA cable or bad adapter I guess - I never determined which.

    :)

Yeah just to repeat the point I made earlier, if you really want the files, connect that PC onto another PC. Maybe a friend's one just before you need the files. It's an easy process to copy stuff over from your hard drive to a USB Key anyway. :)

I assume it is either, as mentioned earlier, the graphics card or the cable/connectors on the PC/TV.

Have you got another LCD TV to try to connect the computer to it? Most LCD would have a VGA (name of cable/connector type used to connect TV to PC) built in. Try it. If it still says no input, my bet would be the graphics card.

Its all about just troubleshooting what could cause the problem, and thus, narrowing it down until you find the problem.

Hope you get it working without paying out too much :)

I might try n swap out the cable between the pc and monitor, see if that works .

If it doesnt then the fault is ; a- the pc or b- the monitor. I ll take it from there then

Managed to get the pc going, but it keeps telling me windows is shut down due to update or driver fault.

I tried system recovery but it couldnt fix the problem and recommends restoring factory settings but I dont want to do that as I have a lot of files n stuff I want to try rescue first.

have a look at the system log in the event viewer to see what driver is causing the shut downs.

Whats the model of your video card, from what you describe you may have a faulty GPU, any Nvidia 8xxx series cards have serious problems, if you know the make and model of the machine please post it

click start and type dxdiag into the search field. It should run a small diagnostic on your computer and give you some system specs. Click the display tab and youll get some info on your card.

I cant as when I turn the pc on the monitor shows nothing, the pc itself actually sounds like it is running away with itself, hard to describe but its like a fast high pitched whirr as opossed to how it normally goes.

Who made the machine or is it a custom build? Yes the card would be the big thing in the brown slot more than likely, although video cards don't tend to state the model # on them always unfortunately!

Bought assembled in a store in carlow, about 3 years old now. This is the first problem with it and trust my luck for it to be a biggie.

Gonna try persuade a tech guy to look at it pro bono lol. Really cant afford to replace it or an expensive repair job

It does sound to me like you have a failed video card, there quite cheap to replace, can get for as little as €35-€40 etc. If you have a techy family member or friend see if you can get another card tested in the machine, to rule out other issues

First, what make and model is the PC.

Check that the monitor cable ( the end will be blue ) is in tight .

    29606a.jpg

Shut down the the PC disconnect the main power cabled.

Open it up, now the card that the monitor cable is attached to , make sure it is not loose.

    Ati-Lt-Pro-Video-Card-PCI-VGA-TV-Out-HS-VGA-M-02-.jpg

    Gently push it down .

Close up the the pc, and test .

if is the monitor card gone best thing in bring in to PC world and they'll replace it.

Is there a fan on the graphics card? If so, stick a pencil in there to stop it spinning when you boot up and see does it still make that plane-taking-off sound. If not, then the chances are the card has burned out and will need to be replaced. You should be able to find a new one for under 40 euros or even for free from someone who has a spare.
