Is his playing career now finished?

He's only 38, and was an exceptional player on his day

It'd be a shame to never see him grace the oche again

he was no more than an average player to be fair..his commentating is shoddy too.

You are being very unfair actually.

He was number 5 in the world at one stage and a four time World Championship semi finalist. When on form not many could live with him.

He is quoted as saying "i'll will give a shot to the first 6 months of 2012 on the protour" and if it doesnt work he'll hang up the the hawaiin shirts.

    Yeah, he's a poor commentator.

Funny story about him though. I was booking him and russ bray for a gig last year (bray comes with mardle as part of the deal, on wayne's insistence) anyway a price was agreed and when I mailed him again he had double booked. He said something about money should have been paid up front even though we had already agreed the money terms. In the end I said to him "just admit that you acted the dick here" and he replied "ok I acted the dick. Sorry"

    Haha

i like wayne, 5 times WC SF. i always the wc 06 sf between him and phil where it was 6-5. it was a cracking game. i think wayne missed the boat in the 08 WC where he lost to shepherd. i think it would have been a 50/50 game between him and john part. i love when wayne refers to the power as mr. t in commentary. hopefully he'll be back on the tour doing well next year

I was at that game in the Circus tavern, an absolute cracker of a game. There is no doubt that Mardle could be anyone on his day and is certainly one of the better players to never win a major title. I would love to see him back on the oche but I don't think he has the desire anymore. He makes a good living through Sky commentary and the exhibition circuit but I hope he manages to do well and get back on the TV because darts need players like Mardle involved in the game.

tks kp, i heard wayne got dartitis, not sure if this is true but it might explain his drop down the rankings. hopefully he gets his tourcard and gets right back up there. i mean he should take a lot from ritchie burnetts rise up the rankings again. i remember seeing ritchie in the uk open in 05, it was painful to watch him struggle with dartitis. but credit to him for giving it another shot

Mardle was decent at best. Not saying he was a bad thrower by any matter of means, but the way Sky used to hype him up, people make out he was alot better than he actually was.

Last chance saloon for him it seems, he will Pdc q school in january and if he fails to win a tour card he will call it a day. its a shame really a great entertainer and a great darts player.

The pressure will be on for him. hope he wins a tour card so that will encourage him.

I think you're being totally unfair to Wayne

As was said above, he was ranked 5th in the world, got to numerous world championship semi finals,

And don't forget in his breakthrough year with the BDO he went quite far as well, a semi final as well I think

He was certainly closer to the top, than he was the bottom

I don't think i'm being unfair at all. He was a good player but that's it. Nothing special. Number 5 in the world and a few semi finals don't mean a whole lot - And the standard while he was number 5 is nothing compared to now. On his best day, Mardle probably averaged around 95, which was good but the amount of times he lost his head when he went a few legs/sets down was frightening.

95 is 2 points better than Martin Adams multi world championship winners usual average. And there haven't being many throwing averages that would comfortably beat a 95 average in this PDC World Championship either. Throwing a 98 or 99 (which only a few have done so far) can easily be beaten by a 95.

Theres also Terry Jenkins who very rarely averages over 95 and is always there or there abouts in the big ones and generally considered the best PDC pro to never win a major.

I think alot of people underate Wayne cause he lost his nerve from 08 on. Before the "Mardle Drift" which started takin his average down, he was a very, very steady player who was no soft touch for anyone.

    **** commentator though.

His desire is gone, I remember watching the baxter v farmer 1st round match a few days ago and the co commentator started going on about how wayne brilliantly beat phil tayler in the quarter finals 4 years ago.

Wayne then said "dont be going on about me winning, it gets boring after a while".

    His desire is gone,

This is the worst thing about it, everytime he talks in a vein about playing, he is using the past tense "I remember when", "back in the day", "years ago" or even "i was the same, I used to ........." very defeatist attitude, and tbh you might as well not bother going back on the pro-tour for six months. Save yourself the money and hassle Wayne; if thats your point of view.

Its clear with that sort of attitude he wont be getting his form back anytime soon.
He definately needs a sports psychologist, there is absolutely no confidence there anymore and that dates back to his match with jyhan Artut 2 yrs ago at the worlds. I remember his walk on: No jumping up and down or smiling like the old wayne, just a normal walk on not even shaking peoples hands on the way and the look on his face as if to say "Ive lost before the game even began"

To be fair, he's the best pundit there. While Bristow certainly knows his stuff, he's a bit hard to listen to. Harrington is full of pro PDC guff and has no great analysis of the game bar cliche after cliche. Mardle does give good insight, and comes across very well too. He's not a bad commentator either imo, but better in the studio.

Wayne has announced today that he has had a change of heart on doing the circuit this year he's gonna concentrate on the exhibitions and corporate end of things also commentating, said he don't have the hunger or fight in him to compete every week, pity really I'm presuming sky have offered him a nice wage for commentary which in turn looks like the end for sid waddel,

thats a shame mate, i like wayne as a player/person and was hoping he would make a comeback like ritchie burnett :) anyway will miss sid as well, the WC were not the same without sid.

Have to admit wasnt a fan of Mardle the player, but have warmed to him as a commentator. Gives a real insight into the mind of a pro player were it matters most. On the oche.

Actually lost a little respect for Wayne now because of this decision. I always liked him as a player and defended him when others said he was only average. Any sportsman who just gives up and decides to take the easy route is a waste of talent and shows cowardice more than anything else. Disappointing.
