One of the strengths of this forum is the mix of fans so anyway I just thought it would be a relatively good idea to provide some context to the top of the list. As quoting these mad Japanese names can be kind of smarky/Wrestling hipstery. Dave Meltzer wrote these two quotes about Powerslam's #1 Tanahashi the first of which appears in the latest newsletter:

Tanahashi’s title reign has been arguably the strongest of any major promotion world champion since the two-year Kenta Kobashi reign from 2003 to 2005 with the GHC title. Tanahashi, with his win over Yuji Nagata on 12/4, tied Yuji Nagata’s all-time record for title defenses with the title, that he will attempt to break at the 1/4 show at the Tokyo Dome when he defends against Minoru Suzuki. It was not only a record setting run, but virtually every title defense has been in the very good to excellent range, with matches with Nagata, Shinsuke Nakamura and Tetsuya Naito all being strong match of the year candidates.

Dave on the current Wrestling scene and primarily New Japan who have 3 of out the top 5 wrestlers:

Pro wrestling doesn't suck. I watch New Japan PPVs and they are as good as any PPVs of any company in their heyday. Great characters. Great matches. Month to month booking storylines (and I don't even watch the TV and can keep up just from the PPVs themselves). Super world title matches in the main event and a belt that's over.

WWE is hit and miss. They have talented guys and good matches. The bad booking that's always changing to where nothing makes sense doesn't help.

TNA also has some good things but overall it's going nowhere.

Before people accuse me of just being a Meltzer bot (again :P) I brought the second quote to the attention of Alan4l who is a kind of a point man for Puro and the Indies online who watches way more NJPW than probably anyone and he agreed with Dave's assessment.

Tanashi and Orton deserve it more than anyone else this year. I got alot of flack for putting Orton as my wresltlers of the year on 411 but he has had an amazing year.

Bully Ray in the PS 50 Yes. Christian should be no.1 imo. Orton peaked in his feud with Christian and it really helped get him over. I don't watch Japanese stuff so I don't know who Tanahashi is.

Decent list alright . Great to see devitt in one of the top spots. Hopefully this will get him more attention as he deserves. Currently watching a lot of njpw and he never ceases to amaze.
I'm surprised to see no one has yet to come on crying that punk is not on top or maybe I am too early.
I think Ziggler deserves a higher spot though ha has had great wrestling matches this year and he has worked his ass off. First guy in a whole doing double spots on ppvs too isn't he?
