No injuries I hope and lucky it was at low speed. There was a similar incident / thread earlier this year or last year.

Any previous crashes with the bars?

Scary! While they served you well I'd hope for a more graceful retirement.

Extreme power output sprinting off the line did the damage - the bars were fine, just not up to the task...

It is highly recommended that the Euro cyclist utilize any opportunity to humorously don equipment that failed during the demonstration of superior physical strength. This serves the dual purpose of mocking one's sponsor and, in addition, providing a public display of why said rider did not finish the race on the podium. Breaking equipment due to power output is generally the best way to finish a race outside of winning it. If no spectators are present, the Euro cyclist shall prominently wear the broken equipment during all post race interviews. If the Euro cyclist suffers more then two mechanical failures of similar nature in rapid succession, throwing a petulant tantrum is strongly suggested.

It happened to me recently also.

What kind of mileage/age was in these handlebars? Had they been involved in spills previously?

I think I'm going to invest in an xray machine...

    ...do xrays damage bike components?

    *worried*

Up until now, I wouldn't have thought bars were "consumables" like wheels ,tyres and brakes but maybe they are, just to avoid these nightmares?

It's a good idea to replace alloy bars every couple of years.

no spills as afar as I can remember but I guess they were about 8 yo.

Definitely a power thing. Sure I've done the same thing myself only last july...

Very happy with the new 'Ritchey Comp Streem Handlebar' from wiggle too.

Aluminium has no fatigue limit, parts like that will always fail at some point if they are subject to that kind of cyclic loading, e.g. a handlebar clamped by a stem.

    But hey, new bars!

Are the old Cinelli type bars from 80's bikes steel or some sort of alloy. My impression is that the older bars while heavier were stronger. I hope so as I am using an old pair of Sakae road champion bars ( http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=b600f862-1d74-4ea6-9d02-28f53006e2a7 )

Just in case you were being serious......X-rays don't damage bike components.

Having conducted some trials, I can report that frames and forks are eminently X-ray-able. How useful this is is debatable.
The actual extent of cracks in carbon parts (invisible / partially visible to 'the naked eye') can be seen on X-ray. A 'crack' in an Aluminium / alloy part would be as visible to look at as it would appear on an X-ray. Aluminium / alloy fatigue might be visible on an X-ray as a 'thinning' of the width of the walls of the bars/tube/whatever, however I will need to carry out further studies to confirm this hypothesis.....;)

    Glad you weren't hurt morana!

Hmm, you seem to have some scientific knowledge, plus access to the necessary apparatus...

What can you tell me about creating atomic super monsters using gamma rays? I was thinking of giving the bike a bit of a blast, and then maybe topping myself up a bit? Might help with the hills!

PM me if you have had to fake your own death to stop the government tracking you down and are keeping a low profile...

I ate some free rice from the Fukushima region when I was Japan there. PM if you want me to check for cracks.

I think I have had them since 2009 and I don't think that they were ever crashed. When they broke, I wasn't doing anything in particular apart from taking a corner very slowly thankfully. They just eased away rather than snapping. I replaced them with a set of 3t Ergonova Pro.

I am seriously considering faking my own death to avoid work tomorrow. Either that or don't breath on/close to anyone who isn't already anaesthetised/drunk/dead.....
    Does this help?
