Passat died on me tonight

    Hey guys,

I have a 02 Passat. Was just saving up to get the catalytic convertor, window regulator and new headlights done after xmas ahead of the NCT in march and now this has happened! I started it up tonight and was driving about five minutes when the radio died, then the dash went, then gradually all the electronic things started turning off and the whole car lost power and died. As I was pulled in waiting on help the hazard lights died after a few minutes too.

Google says its could be an alternator. Any idea how much this will set me back and is it a big job? Would a novice be able to tackle it or is it much more serious than that?

Thanks in advance for any replies

Could be just your aux belt, check that first. that'd be the cheapest to replace.

Loose wire < belt < alternator + battery.

Yep Have to agree neighour asking my opinion on their sluggish car (I'm not a mechanic) ...no aux belt in it.
Loose wire < belt < alternator + battery.

    ^ This as well

Yep, sounds like you've lost electrical power. Check the belt, if it's intact then get yer alternator off and get it sorted.

Hint: bench charge your battery in the mean time.

could be a number of things...altenator, altenator clutch pulley, ribbed belt tensioner, ribbed belt.... have you checked to see what state the belt is in?
